Air Source Heat Pump Tips | Dual Fuel Heating
A dual fuel heat pump is a heat pump with a gas furnace for backup heating rather than electric heat strips.
Air source heat pumps have a backup heating source. In most installations, the backup heating source is electric heat strips. Electric heat strips are very cheap to install in most cases. However, while electricity is generally regarded as 100% efficient, producing it is more costly than other heating methods. For a more efficient heat pump, consider a dual fuel heat pump, or a heat pump with a gas furnace for the backup heat source. It will be more costly to install, but your monthly bills will be reduced.
Ducane Heat Pump Reviews - Consumer Ratings | Technical Details
Anyone who has owned a heat pump knows sometimes the heat pumps a lot of noise, especially when shifting from the heating mode to the defrost mode. Technically when the heat pump goes into defrost mode it goes from heating to cooling for the condenser while the air handler energizes the backup heat.
Speaking of backup heat, most heat pumps utilize electric heat strips for the backup heat. It may cost a little more but with a gas furnace as backup heat, you can save some money. It’s called dual fuel and a good economical heat pump uses gas rather than electric for the backup heat.
Ducane was found in 1947 in Union City, New Jersey, and was eventually purchased by Lennox. Ducane produces HVAC products for residential and light commercial applications including gas furnaces, oil furnaces, unit heaters, heat pumps, and air conditioners.

Please Do Not purchase a Ducane Hvac. Installed in 2015,
Its been down two major times
Stopped working yesterday. Also note you only get a 5 year warranty. That says a lot for the company they don’t even have any confidence in this brand.
All manufactures out there only give a five year part warranty on their entry level equipment. Which can be extended to a ten year part coverage by filling out the form that comes with the equipment.
Very disappointed installer.Installed Ducane Split System 4HP18LT36P-2 WITH THE MATCHED AIR HANDLER in July of 2015. May of 2017 the Compressor Shorted out to ground. Replacement compressor was supplied under warrantee thru R.E.Michel Company. R410A refrigerant and other supplies were not covered.
Now Mid January 2019 Compressor Shorted and tripped Circuit. I waited 5 days for the compressor having 20 degrees F weather. No electric Aux. heat can keep up leaving house at night at 60 degrees F. I will be replacing this 2 stage compressor again tomorrow. This leave about 1 1/2 years left on the unit. The cost of the compressor at that point would be a cool grand (no pun intended).
Same here. I had to replace the compressor two times within the first five years. Also had to replace the air handler variable speed motor out of warranty.

don’t buy
I’ve owned mine 3 weeks and it has been nothing but trouble. 20 minutes of cold air for the “defrosting phase” followed by 40 minutes of heat. Does that sound efficient?

Dissatisfied with Ducane Heat Pump
I have a Ducane heat pump which is now 4 years old. I’ve had to have the freon filled two times and now the unit keeps freezing up. My service man has been out over 7 times trying to find the problem. Ducane will not return my phone calls. I’m basically heating with the heat strips now. It’s costing me a fortune. Don’t waste your time and money with a Ducane heat pump. You’ll only be sorry.

Don’t bother! My home was built in 2005 and the heat pump/air has broken 5 or 6 times now…poor quality parts, poor reliability.

Ducane not recommended
I bought my home new and the builder had Ducane heat pumps installed. I’ve only been in the house for 2 years, however, the manufacture dates for the pumps is 2005. These systems have been nothing but trouble since moving in. I have a 4-ton upstairs and 5-ton downstairs and both have failed to consistently heat and cool the home.
Part of the problem may have been the installation by the builder, believe he used systems that were too large, however, the systems are out of warranty and my 5-ton now ha a shot compressor among other things. Every repair person who has come to my home states the Ducane systems are junk and builders should not be allowed to use them due to all the problems.
