Ruud Heat Pump Reviews - Consumer Ratings - Ruud is directly related to Rheem. Rheem and Rudd are sister companies under Japanese water heater manufacturer Paloma so the Rheem and Rudd product line is similar in technical features but different in name and sometimes color. The Ruud top-of-the-line model includes the Ultra series.
Whenever purchasing a new top-of-the-line condenser it is important to get a matching Ultra air handler to realize the rated efficiency on the unit. The Ultra air handler has a variable speed ECM blower which helps the efficiency of the heat pump system.

Air Source Heat Pump Tips | Dual Fuel Heating
A dual fuel heat pump is a heat pump with a gas furnace for backup heating rather than electric heat strips.
Air source heat pumps have a backup heating source. In most installations, the backup heating source is electric heat strips. Electric heat strips are very cheap to install in most cases. However, while electricity is generally regarded as 100% efficient, producing it is more costly than other heating methods. For a more efficient heat pump, consider a dual fuel heat pump, or a heat pump with a gas furnace for the backup heat source. It will be more costly to install, but your monthly bills will be reduced.
Additional Features | Ruud Heat Pump Reviews
- Humidity control when heat pump matched with the proper air handler
- Select units equipped with electronic expansion valve for better efficiency
- Refrigeration pressure controls to prevent the heat pump unit from running when there are serious problems with heat pump pressures

Ruud 3 ton gas package 2009. Went through three X13 blower motors, one capacitor, a control board in 14 years. X13 is a known problem and is in many other brands, so not that bad. Heating part is rusty after 14 years. If not for the flaky X13, a really solid unit.
We purchased our ruud HVAC systems three years ago, HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT BREAK DOWNS. As far as I am concerned these systems are a JUNK!!! Do not waste your money Last won was a leaking Acoil. One thousand dollars out of pocket to repair
DO NOT buy a Ruud.
Unreliable with error codes that even their factory and other trained techs can not resolve. Loud, constant malfunction, and other maladies too numerous to list.
T971 applies most often.
I paid 5500 dollars for the ruud unit to be installed in 2016 , it has broke down every year since, service repair is out of site. Last year it broke down in Aug. (I live on the gulf coast, very hot) I was without air for 2 weeks. Coast around 800 to repair, this year during a cold spell it quit heating, repairman said coil was leaking and would cost around 900 to replace plus 200 for the service call. That is 1200 dollars, what next. If it breaks again I will have it taken out and sit it on my utility to. With a sign that says it is a pc. Of junk and pull it around everywhere.
DO NOT BUY A RUUD!!!
I splurged and bought the higher end unit. less than 2 years old and already I have an expensive repair. I live in VA so it’s not even a harsh winter. And the air filters don’t fit at all.
Had a Trane for 23 years and the only thing I ever had to do was replace a capacitor one time.
SAVE YOUR MONEY… BUY A TRANE
Don’t buy a ruud heat pump i bought one in 2016. Warranty was 10 years (parts). It has cost me money every year, last year around 800 dollars this year they tell me it has a freon leak and to replace the part and freon will be around 1000 dollars. What next.
Rudd Heat Pump is the worst unit to buy. The company will not stand by their product. We had it installed May 2016. Every season we have to have it repaired. The day it was installed the HVAC company had to come back twice to get it going. It has a old moldy odor.
I have more problems with the ruud heat pump than any other unit I have owned and I’m 75 years old
The company and the installation people will not stand by there products
Ruud sucks
had a heat pump installed 6 years ago it has never made it a full year without needing to be repaired
TOO MUCH MAINTENANCE. We have had a RUDD for about 6 years and have had issues with it making awful noises and not working well. It was finally decided the 1st unit put in was faulty after several checks from service man and the company sent a representative down to observe our unit and other people that had put in the same unit with the same problems. We finally got the first one replaced. Coil also had to be replaced because it was leaking. It worked again for a while and with this coil we had the dirty sock syndrome where awful smells fill your house when the heat pump kicks in and blows heat. Checkup on the unit determined it needed more charge added to it last spring. Now this fall when we turned the heat on, the house would not heat very well as the heat pump kept kicking on and off continually and then flip over to emergency heat, then right back to to the heat pump. We called repairman and they determined the coils were leaking again and told us it was a bad design by the company. The copper coils were too thin and this was a known problem, faulty design. When getting them replaced by “a better coil design” we find out the coils are still under warranty, but not the labor to replace them. Cost us $500 to get warranty work replacing the coils….. ridiculous. Should have been a recall on this with the issue they were having. I won’t put in another RUDD heating system again. The older unit (NOT A RUDD) we replaced 6 years ago never had any issues and ran well for several years. Seems like every year or two we have to do something major to keep the RUDD system running.
I had a ruud for 19years now I had some repairs but overall a good unit like to replace it with one but been told it’s been replaced by Rheem
BEAWARE! I bought a Ruud 15 SEER Mod.UPQL-JEZ heat pump in 2014. During cool rainy weather the unit emits a foul moldy odor. My research found this condition is called “dirty sock syndrome” and common with high SEER heat pumps. When I contacted RUUD they said the problem is environmental not a defect in their engineering or materials. Strange, the old unit I replaced was a RUUD and I had no odor problem with it. My neighbor two doors down bought the same heat pump during the same summer, and yes, he has the same problem.
Vindex will cure your dirty socks syndrome. Yep it happens all the time, “the old one didn’t have it” guess what, your new one does.
Fortunately vindex is an easy treatment, works instantly and permanently.
I had a Ruud heat pump installed on 10,2013. It has been a piece of junk from the start and I am still fighting it. My installer had to put refrigerant in for summer for cooling and take some out for winter so we had heat. I finally got so frustrated I hired another company. They said the “A” coil was too small for the outside unit. I had to pay them $800.00 dollars for a larger size. This was after paying $4000.00 for the whole unit. That cured some of the problems. Now when I set my thermostat to 72 degrees, the heat goes off at about 71 and a half degrees and the blower never shuts off. With the blower never shutting off, the heat never comes back on.
worst product, 5 service calls first 6 months, unit 18 months and freezing up. NEVER NEVER buy a Rudd
