Air Source Heat Pump Tips | Dual Fuel Heating
A dual fuel heat pump is a heat pump with a gas furnace for backup heating rather than electric heat strips.
Air source heat pumps have a backup heating source. In most installations, the backup heating source is electric heat strips. Electric heat strips are very cheap to install in most cases. However, while electricity is generally regarded as 100% efficient, producing it is more costly than other heating methods. For a more efficient heat pump, consider a dual fuel heat pump, or a heat pump with a gas furnace for the backup heat source. It will be more costly to install, but your monthly bills will be reduced.

Technicians Perspective | Goodman Heat Pump Reviews
Furthermore, overall from a tech’s point of view, Goodman makes good equipment. All manufacturers have their little problems from time to time but Goodman usually keeps it simple and therefore easier for heat pump troubleshooting. When the time comes for a heat pump repair - however, I would consider Goodman to be just as reliable as the others brand names and manufacturers. Proper installation is key when you buy a new air conditioner or heat pump. Make sure you select the right contractor for the job. Use our buyer’s advice section on our main site for helping in selecting a good HVAC contractor to install your new system.
Warranties | Goodman Heat Pump Reviews
Goodman offers average warranties for the HVAC industry. Some of Goodman’s premium equipment offers a lifetime warranty on the compressor with the remainder of the system getting the ten-year parts warranty. I can’t say this enough but your decision should not be based on a brand or on any fancy offerings they have for equipment or warranties. Your decision to purchase should be based on the quality of the contractor. A good contractor will stand behind the product they install. They will install it correctly and make sure you are happy.
Goodman History | Goodman Heat Pump Reviews
Founded in 1954 by HVAC Contractor Harold Goodman Goodman Manufacturing makes it home in Houston, Texas. Goodman started making flexible air ducts and plastic blade registers and later started manufacturing operations to include HVAC equipment including heat pumps. One of Goodman’s philosophies is to build HVAC equipment that has high quality at a low cost.

One Hr Heat & AC in Greenwood SC installed a Goodman heat pump a little less than 4 years ago. The unit is dissabled for the 3rd times, 2 times with a refrigerant leak. This time it has been down for oveer a month and according to One Hr Heat & AC the necessary replacement coil is unavailable with no expected availibility date. My previous unit lasted over 20 yrs.
NEVER< NEVER BUY GOODMAN
I had a Goodman installed 7 years ago. From the very first week the unit made a loud banging noise at startup. I called the installer Goodman certiified, he stated the units do make noise. You could hear the noise 3 houses away. I don’t think this is normal. Other technicians told me it probably was installed incorrectly. Today I found out the unit is out of freon. The fix could cost $3000. I would never recommend a Goodman and would rather buy a new unit then ever have a Goodman. The name should be junkman.
We had a “Goodman” put in 2004,first problem was that it was very noisy when it went into defrost(right under our bedroom window),nothing could be done about it.The big fan crapped out 2009,was reluctantly covered by 10 year warrenty(service call $65)I guess you could call it very good for the $.
Most heat pumps make noise when it switches to defrost. The reversing valve reversing the flow of refrigerant when the refrigerant is under pressure is the most common noise the heat pump makes when switching to and from defrost. It is an unavoidable noise with most heat pumps (Geothermal heat pumps typically do not have a defrost cycle). The installation under the window can be fixed by moving the condenser to a better location. However it can be a costly endeavor moving the unit as it requires moving the refrigeration lines and the electrical connections.

Ripped Off
Purchased and installed in November 2007 by an “authorized” and recommended Goodman contractor. After one year problems galore. Due to the contractor’s neglect, Goodman does not honor their warranty. Now compressor blows out and the warranty covers nothing. The new “authorized” contractor (suggested by them) recommends changing the whole unit (about $3600). Would have a cost of over $10,000 in less than 3 years. Would NEVER recommend a Goodman or should I say Badman. Warranty is not worth paper printed on and I think a simian from the local zoo could become a certified contractor with them.

My Goodman system is 15 months old. No problems. Have the unit installed by a knowledgeable contractor and it will last. Its important to have everything replaced (matched set) when installing. My contractor noted several discrepancies with my old system that certainly contributed to its failure.

Goodman was installed in our custom built home. It has been nothing but trouble from the first year on. I have already replaced both coils. I have spent over $2,000 on repairing this unit in the last 2 years. In our previous home we had a trane heat pump. When we moved it was 19 years old and we had one repair for under a $100. I’ll never buy a Goodman again.
