Air Source Heat Pump Tips | Dual Fuel Heating
A dual fuel heat pump is a heat pump with a gas furnace for backup heating rather than electric heat strips.
Air source heat pumps have a backup heating source. In most installations, the backup heating source is electric heat strips. Electric heat strips are very cheap to install in most cases. However, while electricity is generally regarded as 100% efficient, producing it is more costly than other heating methods. For a more efficient heat pump, consider a dual fuel heat pump, or a heat pump with a gas furnace for the backup heat source. It will be more costly to install, but your monthly bills will be reduced.
Maytag offers a great warranty for select models. Always make sure you review the terms and conditions of the warranty when you base your purchase decision on the warranty. Most warranties are parts only and do not include labor. High Performance HVAC always recommends the consumer purchase extended parts and a labor warranty is available from the manufacturer.

Maytag Heat Pump Reviews - Consumer Ratings
Last fall I had a Maytag 16 seer heat pump installed. It has a variable speed fan, the installer said a variable speed fan is more efficient and would save me money. Since then it has been nothing but problems. First the unit simply stopped cooling. Installer looked at it and said there was a tiny switch that hadn’t been turned on. It worked after that, but wasn’t cooling well. The installer came out again and said the fan was set too low. He said he adjusted the fan. It again worked, intermittently, then stopped altogether. The installer came out and looked at the thermostat. He said it wasn’t wired correctly (these are the guys who installed it!). He pulled out wires and rewired it. It worked for a couple days then stopped. The installer then replaced the thermostat. It didn’t solve the problem. So he again replaced the thermostat and left. By then I needed heat. The system worked for awhile than did not heat well. Recently I had the thermostat set on 68 overnight, it never got off of 66. The installer came back out, couldn’t figure out what was going on. He finally said he adjusted the fan to push out more air. He said the thermostat will automatically switch over to emergency heat when it senses it is too cold out. That was yesterday, and once again, here I sit, the thermostat is set on 68, the temperature has dropped to 64! The installer said if there is a two degree difference, the unit will kick on. The emergency heat has finally kicked on with a four degree difference. The house had to get damn cold before the heat worked right. This morning I awoke to what I thought was a loud piece of construction equipment running outside. It wasn’t. It was the HVAC unit and it was making a roaring noise, like a farmer’s combine if you have ever heard that, very very loud. It made the noise for awhile, then stopped, the heat wasn’t coming on. After two hours it decided to work again when there was a four degree difference in indoor temperature. By then my home’s temperature was 64 and very uncomfortable. Yesterday the installer seemed to not know what to do. It’s very cold outside and the unit is not switching over to emergency heat as it should when there is a two degree difference in setting. The installer said when there is a two degree difference in setting, the emergency heat should kick on. However, all my unit does is push out cool air and getting my home colder instead of warmer! My house is cold. I am really really sorry I ever purchased this Maytag unit, it has been nothing but problems. I’m not a novice homeowner, this is the third house I’ve owned and maintained. The previous unit for this house was only a 10 seer, single speed “builder grade” unit and it worked well, very dependable. I really regret my decision to purchase this Maytag product.
This heat pump has saved us so much money on our electric bill. We did have a few problems with it since it was installed two years ago but our HVAC guy came out right away and fixed it for no charge. I definitely recommend Maytag.
