Heil Air Handlers
Heil Air Handlers - Heil air handlers are available in multi-position from up-flow to down-flow, to horizontal flow models for residential and light commercial applications. Heil air handlers are compatible with the Observer communicating system.
This communicating system allows the condenser and the air handler to communicate via a special thermostat. This means if you select this system you will not get the conventional type of thermostat but rather a proprietary communicating thermostat that uses two wires to communicate digitally to each piece of equipment on the communication trunk.
If it was me I would want the contractor to install the regular thermostat wire along with the new two wires for the communication between the equipment. Having the contractor install the traditional thermostat wire with the newer wire allows me the option in the future to easily switch back to the legacy type of thermostat which you purchase off the shelf at most hardware stores or online.
I’m not saying that anything is wrong with the new type of communicating system that only uses two wires, I’m just saying I want the option to switch to a conventional thermostat in the future just in case.

Heil has some proprietary features to some of their equipment which means if these things are installed on your unit you must rely on a Heil dealer for repair and replacement of those particular parts. That is opposed to being able to call any HVAC contractor to make the repair with stock parts. In other words, it takes options from you when your system needs repair or maintenance. Many manufacturers are doing this in order to help their bottom.

Heil Condensing Units - Professional Opinion
Heil has a good dealer network to help you with sales, installation, and service of their equipment. In addition to condensers, Heil also offers other HVAC systems to match their condensing units along with gas furnaces, oil furnaces, air handlers, package units, geothermal systems, and other HVAC systems for residential and light commercial systems.
The best decision you can make is to select a qualified HVAC installation and service contractor to install your new system. Studies done by the Department of Energy show that proper installation can dramatically increase the efficiency and longevity of the equipment.
Questions for the Salesman/Dealer | Heil Air Conditioner Reviews
- Can I use a regular thermostat or do I need to use a Heil thermostat for the communicating type of air conditioner they offer? The purpose of this question is that the thermostat appears to be proprietary. So if the thermostat goes bad on a Friday you may have to wait until Monday to get a new one. You can just go down to the hardware store and buy a new one and install it yourself. You have to go to the dealer for that and you will likely have to pay a service call even if it is under warranty.
- Do you offer extended parts and labor warranty? Labor is typically never included in the standard warranty and labor is not cheap.

Heil Air Conditioner Reviews - Consumer Ratings
I had a Heil heat pump top of the line system installed in April and the controller board went out two weeks ago. The Service company who installed it ordered a new board and it did not work. It was freezing in my 92 year old Mom’s home and we were told the temp would not go below 66 degrees. They got the heat to work a little better over the past two weeks.
Well last night is was in -5 degrees and now it’s 40 degrees in her home. She lives lives 1,200 miles from me and now we have called the local service number and asked them to get this system working again or rent some space heaters to keep my mom warm. The unit we replaced was over 27 years old. This is so frustrating – I’m sure the Heil, Carrier parent company management are all nice and cozy in their homes while my Mom is freezing in her home with a brand new system!
Nothing is made to work or last very long anymore, but to not have is work during the first year is unacceptable – Carrier you need to make this righ!
Sitting here and its 90% in house. Fan Motor went out under house. Unit just turning 4 years old. They are telling me no motor available. no long made. Now why in the hell would they not make the motor. We have not had any problems until this 6 days ago. So I guess you are to sit here and burn alive. I want an answer. My husband has breathing problems, my pets are hot and I am mad. The distributor gave the installer a wrong motor and then told them. oh we gave you wrong motor and we cant get another one. It is all under warranty. So this 65 year old woman and going to get on the phone and call everyone I can. I am not giving up. I want a brand new unit, like now. This unit was installed in new home, next month will be 4 years ago. We had to rebuild after our home burned down.
Brand new Heil AC with Furnace on a new build home. The Compressor is not kicking in and we just used it the first time since we moved in, in May 2017. The fan runs, but the compressor doesn’t kick in and there isn’t enough air blowing through the house (RANCH) with full unfinished basement. Called the warranty company and they suggested changing the filter and checking the AC Breaker. It’s a new furnace and AC unit, filter still clean. If the AC Breaker was tripped, the unit wouldn’t run to begin with.
Today I am replacing a barely 10 year old (just out of warranty) 5 ton HEIL air conditioner. The unit has been serviced 5 times in 10 years, costing more than $3K. The A-Coil was cracked when the unit was installed, but the dealer refused to honor the warranty and replace the A-Coil. It is being replaced because the compressor seized. HEIL equipment is garbage, their customer service is just as bad.
We replaced a Trane which just turned ten years old, due to the seams splitting out! It was an expensive unit! We purchased a 5.1 ton heat pump Heil unit and have been very pleased in every aspect. I have heard that your installer is very important!
We had new Heil units installed in February when our heat went out. It was a new Heil gas furnace and air conditioner. We really only wanted a new furnace but after looking at everything and the age of our old air conditioner we didn’t want to have to worry about that going out soon also so we got the full package. We’ve had the guy come back once to check it out because we thought it was making a funny noise. Turns out everything was fine and it works great. Another bonus was our power bill and gas bill is a lot less with the new Heil system we got.
