The Venstar ColorTouch Programmable Thermostat

The Venstar ColorTouch Programmable Thermostat

Venstar ColorTouch Programmable Thermostat - A first impression when taking the Venstar ColorTouch thermostat from the box was that the thermostat was smaller than I had imagined however it is no smaller than the typical digital programmable thermostat. The more I got into the thermostat the better I liked it even though I found what I think is a minor flaw in the thermostat. Despite the flaw, we are recommending the Venstar ColorTouch thermostat for residential and light commercial users who will find the benefits and features rich and colorful. (more…)

Ohms Law and HVAC | Heating and Cooling Technical

Ohms Law and HVAC - Ohms Law is used by HVAC Technicians, electricians, electronics technicians, engineers, and others who deal with electrical circuits every day. It is a necessary fundamental that anyone dealing with electricity or electronics should learn. Ohms law is used in many different applications to solve problems (troubleshooting electrical problems), for sizing wire and designing circuits, and for designing printed circuit boards (PCBs). Ohms law is a basic fundamental formula that helps electrical specialist solves problems. Ohms Law is necessary to learn if you are going to be an above-average technician in HVAC.

The NEC and HVAC Chapter Two

The NEC and HVAC Chapter Two - Chapter Two of the National Electrical Code (NEC) covers Wiring and Protection and starts at Branch Circuits, Feeder circuits, GFCI requirements and protection. An HVAC installer may want to pay attention to branch circuit requirements. Article 220 in Chapter two of the NEC includes calculations for branch and feeder circuits including service calculations. (Table 220.3) (more…)

Hot Water Boiler Expansion Tanks – HVAC Hydronics

Hot Water Boiler Expansion Tanks - There are two types of expansion tanks used on hot water boiler systems. The steel expansion tank and the bladder-type expansion tank. These expansion tanks are used to provide a cushion for the expansion of water when it is heated.

Without this cushion of air, the pressure in the boiler system would exceed the setting on the pressure relief valve. Finally, this will cause the pressure relief valve to open and discharge water to relieve the pressure. (more…)

BAS DDC Learning

Siemens Apogee DDC Controller

BAS DDC Learning | HVAC - HVAC Building Automation Systems (BAS) or Direct Digital Controls (DDC) is pretty much one and the same. Basically described BAS and DDC are combining air conditioning, heating, ventilation, lighting, electrical loads, security systems, and life and safety systems to a computer and complex algorithms for better control over the systems. Condensing Unit Frozen Wont Turn Off

Condensing Unit Frozen Wont Turn Off - What you can expect to learn from Condensing Unit Frozen won’t Turn Off article: this article is an answer to a question taken from our email by a visitor to High Performance HVAC. We often use the questions we get in the email as a guide to writing articles. The topic is a condensing unit that will not turn off, and it is freezing up. From my experience in the field and using my HVAC knowledge, I offer the readers a list of what could cause this problem. We hope it helps you.
What’s the possible problem with a frozen air conditioner condenser that won’t turn off except with the breaker? (more…)

Air Conditioner Condensation Problems – Condensate Drain Plugged

air conditioning water damageAir Conditioner Condensation Problems - It is important for air conditioning preventive maintenance to be performed on your system to avoid problems. Condensation water leaking near the air handling unit can be avoided with proper air conditioning repair and preventive maintenance. Normally this is a very simple problem that can be fixed in less than 30 minutes. Here is a list of what can cause water around the outside of the air conditioning air handler unit.

Air Handler Coils | HVAC AHU

Air Handler Coils
The air handler coils should be checked for dirt and debris which may have been sucked into the air handler inadvertently. Some air handlers have filters inside them before the coils. It is a good time to change the filters when making this check.

Any dirt or debris on the coil(s) should be removed immediately as these things will impede airflow through the air handler and throughout the entire system as a whole. Dirty evaporator coils can cause AC problems. Some air handler coils are installed in the air handler cabinet while other coils are installed in the ductwork. (more…)
