Air Conditioner Inverter Review - Many mini-split air conditioners and heat pumps use inverters for efficiency. Conventional split system air conditioners and heat pumps can now be purchased with inverters for ultra-efficient heating and cooling.
Inverter air conditioners came to the USA in the form of ductless mini-split air conditioners. They were later expanded to ductless mini-split heat pumps. Inverter air conditioners and inverter heat pumps are considered the most efficient systems available on the market. This is true for conventional systems as well. That includes air source air conditioners and air-source heat pumps. Finally, inverter air conditioners and inverter heat pumps come close to matching the efficiency of geothermal heat pump systems. HVAC Furnace Filter Basics | Indoor Air Quality - Pollen, molds, and dust are common in any household and can be reduced by using an air filter. To maximize the benefits from the cleaner indoor air you should use electrostatic furnace filters and air conditioner filters along with a high-efficiency air cleaner. Electronic Air Cleaners (EAC’s) can also offer you high-quality clean air over the typical cheap air conditioner and furnace filters on the market today. Clean the air in your home and breathe easier. (more…)
How Cooling Towers Work - Cooling towers use evaporation cooling to cool condenser water from a chiller. Water is pumped to the top of the cooling tower, where the water flows down some flow plates to the cooling tower basin. As the water is flowing down the flow plates air is pulled through the plates and over the water where it releases heat through evaporation. (more…)
Air Source Versus Geothermal Heat Pumps - A heat pump is an electric cooling and heating system. It is used to compress and decompress gas to heat or cool a house. This mechanical device pumps heat from a cooler to a warmer location. It can extract heat from the air, water, or the earth. Heat pumps function like an air conditioner in the summer and an electric furnace in the winter.
Therefore, encompassing both a heating and a cooling unit in one device. The COP, or coefficient of performance, calculates the ratio of heat output to electric power consumption. Therefore, COP& measures the performance of a heat pump. (more…)
Outside All Weather Boiler - Outside all-weather boilers are used in circumstances where it is not possible to install the boiler inside a mechanical room or anywhere in the building. There some considerations one needs to take into account about having an outdoor boiler especially if it is for a residential application. (more…)
Water Dripping from Air Conditioner - We have 2 air conditioning units in our house and 2 pipes protrude from the roof. One of the pipes is dripping water. We were told to look for a blockage and to empty the pans. I don’t see where to check for a blockage. Any suggestions? The air conditioning units we have: Bryant models 373LAV, 376CAV Downflow/Horizontal and 383KAV, 395CAV Upflow Gas Furnace. (more…)
SEER Definition: The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is a measure of the cooling efficiency of your air conditioner or heat pump. The higher the SEER number the better the system is at converting electricity into cooling your home. Simply put, manufacturers use it to differentiate between less efficient equipment to the more efficient equipment they sell.
Equipment is tested in a third-party laboratory and the results are certified by ARI. Furthermore, the result of the testing can be looked up in the ARI database for each of equipment if you have the model number. It should be noted that ARI uses strict testing parameters in testing HVAC equipment. Additionally, these standards are issued by ANSI or other respected organizations that issue standardization rules throughout the industry. (more…)
Ductwork Integrity and Insulation - So you are having a new HVAC system installed and you selected a system that is high efficiency and you want to get the most out of it. Have you looked at or has the HVAC contractor looked at the ductwork and determined if it is good enough for the high-efficiency system.
A good HVAC contractor would look at the ductwork to make sure it is adequate and sized properly for the new system. This is often done as the HVAC contractor wants to ensure that the new system is properly matched to the HVAC ductwork lest the system not work as it should. Beyond that, the most overlooked part of the ductwork is the ductwork integrity.
HVAC Indoor Air Quality Solutions - There are many different types of HVAC air filters. The most common type of HVAC air filters is the fiberglass disposable filter that you buy at most hardware or retail stores. Other types of HVAC air filters include the metal or plastic fiber type filters, which are washable.
These HVAC air filters save you money because they are washable, but some are not as efficient at filtering the air as the disposable kind, so they are not as good for HVAC indoor air quality as other alternatives. (more…)
Mini-split Air Conditioners - Ductless air conditioners are like regular air conditioners with ducts in that the compressor is located outside. They are often preferable to window units for aesthetic reasons. Ductless air conditioners are not good for cooling more than 1 or 2 rooms at a time and are expensive on initial purchase. Ductless air conditioners are also known as split system air conditioners or mini-split systems. As mentioned earlier the larger units are placed outside the building or home. (more…)
HVAC Tip - Did you know the human body produces approximately 250 BTU/h when sleeping? Here is a basic list of the approximate BTU/h produced by the human body for various activities:
Watching Television - 400 BTU/h (any sedentary activity)
Cleaning the house - 700 BTU/h (moderate activity)
Mowing the Grass w/push mower - 1800 BTU/h (heavy activity)
Running a marathon - 2400 BTU/h (extreme activity)
The number of people occupying a dwelling or space is a consideration in the load calculation for sizing air conditioning systems simply because humans do give off heat. BTW, the Matrix over blew the numbers. In the movie Morpheus states humans give off over 25,000 BTU's. Only the author of this website is that hot..............))))))
