Gas Furnace with Drain Pipes to Drain the Condensation.
Furnace Water Leak Condensate Problem - Richard, My furnace is leaking water. It is summertime, so I am not using it for heat except for the blower fan which is hooked up to the air conditioner and the heat. I know the pipes from the outside units run into a box on top of the furnace. I think that is a part of the air conditioner. What can I do to fix the problem if you know what the problem is by my explanation here? Dan

Water Heater Maintenance - There are tons of reviews for water heaters and many mention the water heater only lasted a few years. Or the water heater has rusted or corroded, and the reviewer states the water heater is a piece of junk.
I would contend that if some people performed annual maintenance, these water heaters would last many more years. To do that you have to know what kind of HVAC system you have installed for your heating and cooling system. Do you have a hot water boiler with baseboard heating or radiators with the boiler combination?
In addition to the boiler do you have an air conditioning system with ductwork or a mini-split ductless system? Do you have a heat pump system? Do you have electric baseboard heating? Minisplit Ductless Heat Pumps Air Conditioners - There are many people who can actually save money by installing a mini-split ductless air conditioner or heat pump over installing the conventional ducted split system air conditioner or heat pump.
A few of the possible areas where some can use a mini-split ductless heat pump or air conditioner are rooms over the garage where additional heating and cooling is necessary simply because rooms over garages suffer because garages in most homes are not as insulated as is other parts of the home.
This usually creates problems with many of the newer homes because I have seen builders who need a lesson in load calculation and properly sizing the air conditioning or heat pump systems for the conditions. (more…)

Dual Two-Stage Split System with a Dual Slab Coil. Huh?
Richard - Very nice site!- Dual Two-Stage Split System with a Dual Slab Coil - I have a question; my home was fitted out by the previous owner with a twinned system, and a thermostat (Totaline P374-1900) which was not designed to control discreet, paired units. I confirmed this with Totaline. The result is only one unit runs, and the second unit is never activated. It functions, but not automatically.

Hi, We’re trying to compare Maytag and Rheem gas/electric heating/AC packaged units to replace our old ones. The Maytag (15 SEER, 4 ton; PPG1GFX048120) has 2-stage heating and cooling and a variable-speed blower, and 12 years of parts and labor. The Rheem (14SEER, 4 ton; RRPL-B) has a single stage and variable speed blower, 10 yr parts and we can purchase a 10 yr labor warranty.
The Maytag has seemingly better features, but we’re not familiar with Maytag heater/AC units, but know the Rheem name, and have been told it’s highly rated. One heating and air conditioning company quoted the Maytag at more than $2500 less than two other companies quoted the Rheem.
Are you familiar with the Maytag, and do you know if it’s as reliable and as highly rated as the Rheem? Also, whether the wholesale price of the Maytag is that much less than the Rheem, or is the price difference more likely to different labor costs and profit margins of the installation companies?

Even if you have regular air conditioning maintenance done. While there are air

Blank Display on Thermostat Problem - Screen Disappeared - The thermostat display is our interface with our HVAC equipment. The display lets us know what the temperature is in the house. The display tells us what the desired settings are including letting us know the setpoint setting the temperature.
Some displays give us time, and the newer modern displays show us family photos like a screensaver on our computer. But what happens when the display is not there, or there is a blank thermostat display or no display on the thermostat?

Heat Pump Types - There are different types of heat pumps available on the market today. A heat pump is an air conditioning unit that cools when the temperature is hot and heats when it is cold. There are many different types of these heat pump systems available. There is the geothermal heat pump. It can either utilize a series of closed-loop water pipes buried in the ground or other methods of heat exchange. This process removes or absorbs heat for heating and cooling.
Air source heat pumps can be configured differently. One type of air source heating will utilize electric heating for backup heating while another may use a gas furnace for backup heating. These types of systems can also be split systems or package units and nearly all share a similar heat pump sequence of operation. A description of the various types of systems and how they work is below in this article on heat pump types. These systems utilize similar heat pump components but differ in how the heat pump works.
