Closing Off Part of the House To Save Energy on HVAC | HVAC Efficiency

Closing Off Part of the House and HVACClosing Off Part of the House To Save Energy on HVAC - I have a Heil gas/electric package unit in my home. I, particularly, want to know, if I can close off a section to save on heating. Heating dealers have not been helpful as they hedge on whether and how this can be done with the system still running at its most efficiency.

I have closed doors to seal off the area. Then closed floor registers. Should I also close air return in that area? I just read this should not be done at all as it decreases unit efficiency? Will you please advise. I am thinking of closing off part of the house to save energy on HVAC. Thank you. (more…)

Boiler Stainless Steel Exhaust Flue Stack

Boiler Stainless Steel Exhaust Flue Stack
Boiler Stainless Steel Exhaust Flue Stack: This is a photo of a boiler stainless steel exhaust stack. It is used for venting corrosive boiler combustion gases. As the flue gases leave the boiler they cool and depending on the dew point of the gas, the gas will experience a change of state. It will change from a gas to a liquid. This liquid is highly corrosive and only special flues like stainless steel vent can be used when this occurs. Stainless steel prevents premature failure of the boiler vent.

There are many considerations to consider with a new installation of a heating system in comparison to the type of vent to be utilized. The venting system used to vent the gases from the boiler or furnace safely outdoors. It is imperative that safety guidelines be followed when installing any type of venting system for furnaces or boilers using fossil fuels. For detailed information concerning code requirements for installation of venting systems see the IFGC or International Fuel Gas Code. Chapter 5 and Appendix C of the IFGC offer detailed requirements for the installation of venting systems.

Never sacrifice safely, consult a professional when in doubt. There are many rules to follow. A professional will know these rules and apply them as they install the system. They will also, have the system inspected by the code official in your area to double-check to ensure safety guidelines were followed

Energy Recovery Wheels | HVAC Enthalpy & Heat

Energy Recovery Wheels

Enthalpy wheel in a heat recovery unit

Energy Recovery Wheels | HVAC Enthalpy & Heat - As the cost of energy rises engineers are looking for ways to improve and increase energy efficiency. Aside from HVAC equipment with higher energy efficiency rates, improving structures for less heat loss and heat gain, and building automation systems giving the equipment precision control for the

better efficiency of the equipment, there are other ways to increase energy efficiency inside buildings. One of the ways to increase energy efficiency inside buildings is to add energy recovery wheels to the economizer systems. A US Department of Energy study concluded energy recovery wheels can save over 15% of the energy used in commercial HVAC applications.

Boiler Pipe Insulation – Energy Efficiency

Boiler Pipe Insulation - Energy Efficiency - Richard, I have lots of my boiler pipe under the house in a crawl space and some in the basement, and none of this pipe is insulated. I just bought the house last year and this past winter my gas bill was crazy high. Can I increase efficiency by insulating these pipes and what are some other ways to keep the gas bill lower by optimizing the boiler system?

Thanks and I look forward to your answer……….Bill – Pittsburgh, PA

How Inverters Work Basics | Air Conditioning

How Inverters Work Basics - The new way for ultra-efficient air conditioners and heat pumps have modulating compressors and motors. A few years ago it was rare that I got an email asking the question about how inverters work but now I have noticed the question coming more and more so I wanted to write an article to explain how inverters work.

Inverters are used in air conditioning to modulate compressors and fan motors from 100% down to a minimum of 20% although the minimum will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer according to part selection and engineering limitations. To truly understand how inverters work one has to have a basic understanding of electronics. (more…)

Belimo Actuators Automatic Valve Control

Belimo Actuators HVAC Automatic Valve ControlBelimo Actuators Automatic Valve Control - Many processes or actions in HVAC are made more efficient by having them automatically controlled by the control system. This enhancement of efficiency is possible by using Belimo actuator valve control. The Belimo automatic HVAC valve control is made possible with DDC and modulating electric Belimo actuators. (more…)

Bacharach Combustion Analyzer Furnace Testing

Bacharach Combustion Analyzer Furnace Testing

Bacharach Combustion Analyzer

Bacharach Combustion Analyzer Furnace Testing - The combustion analyzer is used to test gas and oil furnaces to make sure the combustion process is as efficient as possible. This multi-function HVAC test instrument can also be used to test spaces for carbon monoxide, test building pressure, all in addition to testing the combustion process of the furnace.

The combustion analyzer allows an HVAC technician to test the flue temperature, the amount of oxygen in the furnace flue gases, the amount of carbon monoxide in the flue gases, the amount of carbon dioxide in the flue gases, and the pressure of the flue. All these readings are necessary so the HVAC technician can make adjustments to the burner settings to ensure efficient combustion using the combustion analyzer. (more…)

Heat Pump Problems | HVAC Heating & Cooling

Heat Pump Problems | HVAC Heating & Cooling - Heat Pumps are very popular especially in the South where air source heat pumps are mostly favored over straight air conditioners with a gas furnace for heating. Heat Pump ProblemsWith a heat pump, one system can provide heating and cooling. Some people rely on a geothermal heat pump system or a water source heat pump. A geothermal heat pump extracts heat from the ground instead of the air like an air source heat pump works. (more…)
