York Versus Carrier Air Conditioners - Every manufacturer has their own parts system and sometimes these parts are readily available aftermarket and sometimes the parts are proprietary and can only be purchased through the manufacturer of that equipment. Carrier is one of the HVAC manufacturers that has proprietary parts and sometimes you will pay a premium for those parts.
The manufacturer can hold the customer hostage especially when it comes to repairing the unit. Of course, York is one of the big HVAC manufacturers and they too have proprietary parts however the parts are usually more reasonable for purchase as far as cost is concerned so people would lean towards purchasing a York simply because the replacement parts are not sold at a premium where with SOME Carrier parts are sold at a premium and are not easily replaceable except through a Carrier dealer.

Goodman versus Trane Air Conditioners - The first thing we need to do when comparing a Trane Versus a Goodman air conditioning system is to make sure we are comparing similar models with similar features. The next thing we need to do when comparing HVAC equipment is to look at the HVAC contractor installing the equipment. If you get a lousy installer or contractor, forget about the name brand because the HVAC system WILL NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY and EFFICIENTLY if the installation is shoddy. Also, the unit will not have the same life expectancy, will fail prematurely, and will need replacing sooner than if the HVAC equipment is installed properly in the first place. Out of any buyers advice about air conditioning and heating equipment that someone can give you this is probably the most important part.

Heat Pump Vs Electric Furnace - Richard, Thank you for such a great site! We have learned a lot from reading your site and recommend it to all our friends. I have to replace our air conditioner that has an electric furnace for heat. We got several quotes from three different contractors. Two of the contractors are recommending replacing the electric furnace with a heat pump system. The heat pump will have electric heat back up.

We live in North Carolina and the winters here are relatively mild compared to the Northern states. We are unsure about the heat pump system. Boiler Systems Installation - Purchasing a boiler can be daunting for most people. Many people do not understand boilers and do not know certain components of boiler systems. Typically they trust the installing contractor to outfit and install the boiler with all the proper boiler components.
That includes making recommendations for optional boiler components that increase efficiency and performance. There are resources you can use to try to understand boiler components such as High Performance HVAC. However, overall, this research or study will not make one an expert in boiler installation. We have to trust the boiler installer and the skills of the contractor.

The price of a new air conditioner is a popular subject. We get several emails every month asking how much it would cost to install a new air conditioner.
First, it is a loaded question. No air conditioner installation job is the same. Some air conditioner installation jobs being more difficult than other air conditioner installation jobs. Lennox Versus York Air Conditioners - Here is a Lennox and York comparison for their premium model air conditioner as requested by a reader of the site. Just off the top of my head, both systems are good systems. I would say Lennox had a slight advantage but the first-hand experience in the field gives most HVAC technicians the opinion that Lennox is over-engineered. (more…)

Hi, We’re trying to compare Maytag and Rheem gas/electric heating/AC packaged units to replace our old ones. The Maytag (15 SEER, 4 ton; PPG1GFX048120) has 2-stage heating and cooling and a variable-speed blower, and 12 years of parts and labor. The Rheem (14SEER, 4 ton; RRPL-B) has a single stage and variable speed blower, 10 yr parts and we can purchase a 10 yr labor warranty.
The Maytag has seemingly better features, but we’re not familiar with Maytag heater/AC units, but know the Rheem name, and have been told it’s highly rated. One heating and air conditioning company quoted the Maytag at more than $2500 less than two other companies quoted the Rheem.
Are you familiar with the Maytag, and do you know if it’s as reliable and as highly rated as the Rheem? Also, whether the wholesale price of the Maytag is that much less than the Rheem, or is the price difference more likely to different labor costs and profit margins of the installation companies?
