Aquastat is the gray box on the left while the circulator is the black pump on the right.
Aquastat Temperature Control - The boiler aquastat controls the temperature of the water inside the boiler jacket. The boiler aquastat is a device to a boiler like a thermostat is to an air conditioner, heat pump, or gas/oil furnace. A boiler aquastat controls the temperature inside the boiler just as the thermostat controls the temperature for an air conditioner or heat pump.
The boiler aquastat will turn the burners on and off and also controls the circulator pump on a hot water boiler system. (more…)
Boiler Maintenance | HVAC Heating - Almost as if by rote many maintenance departments begin their annual maintenance in late summer to get ready for the cooler weather. Does your department understand how important the code is or do they take all this for granted?
Do they understand that if an accident were to occur all these maintenance procedures will be placed under a microscope especially if someone is injured or worse, killed? Along with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and local code enforcement not to mention private firms hired to investigate an accident and that someone or something will be held responsible for the accident. Electronic Control Board for an Electronic Ignition Gas Furnace
Gas Furnace Ignition Control Operation | HVAC Heating. This furnace control board controls much of the functions of this gas furnace with few exceptions. The main control comes from the thermostat and once the thermostat tells the gas furnace control board it is time for the heat to come on the gas furnace control board takes over from there except when the thermostat is satisfied the system shuts down.
On a call for heat from the thermostat the gas furnace control board starts its sequence of operation. This article relates to the sequence of operations for electronic ignition gas furnaces. Some furnaces will vary in their sequence of operation from what is written here. However, most electronic ignition gas furnaces use this sequence of operations. For the sequence of operation for a standing pilot gas furnace see this article.
Have you ever wondered how Heat Pumps work? Heat Pumps can be a very economical way of heating and cooling your dwelling. It depends on geographical location and the cost of electricity in your area. The volatile costs of natural gas, propane, and oil have enabled these conditions. Conditions where it can be cheaper with a heat pump than with fossil fuels. There is a common conception that a heat pump blows cold air.
While this can be true in some cases it is not true. If a heat pump is blowing cold air when in the heating mode then it has a problem. A problem that needs to be corrected. Even when the outside unit kicks into the defrost mode the unit should provide adequate heating.
Heating to heat the zones which it serves. Again, if it is not providing adequate heating then it needs to be looked at for a technical problem. A problem that needs correcting. A well-designed system, working properly and efficiently, can provide competitive and economical heating. (more…)
For proper Air Conditioner Troubleshooting, you need to understand some basics of air conditioners. This includes basic refrigeration, electricity, electrical components and how electro-mechanical controls work. In addition, basic air conditioner components and air conditioner sequence of operation. Before troubleshooting, you need to identify the basic problem with the system. Aside from the basics such as blown fuses or a tripped breaker we will explore other areas to look at for air conditioner troubleshooting. Tripped circuit breakers for air conditioning systems are covered here. A good preventive maintenance program done periodically can help you avoid common air conditioning problems that require troubleshooting. (more…)
The boiler pressure relief valve (PRV) is a safety valve designed to relieve an excessive build-up of pressure inside the boiler. The is a pressure vessel designed to handle a safe amount of pressure. If the pressure were to build up beyond the safety limitations as set forth by the design specifications the boiler system needs a safe way to vent the pressure to prevent an explosion. Furthermore, the boiler PRV is a safe way to vent excessive dangerous pressures inside the boiler. (more…)
Gas Furnace Components 2 - Gas Burners - Depending on the type of gas furnace and how the gas furnace was engineered will depend on the type of gas burners. Inshot burners generally shoot a flame into the combustion chamber where an induced draft exists. For sealed combustion chambers a forced or induced draft will exist.
There are burners with precisely drilled holes in them. Then there are slotted gas burners that extend into the combustion chamber and generally have induced draft combustion chambers. However, these can also have forced draft combustion chambers if the combustion chamber is sealed. The size of these holes and slots in gas burners will also depend on the altitude and capacity of the furnace. (more…)
Minisplit Ductless Heat Pumps Air Conditioners - There are many people who can actually save money by installing a mini-split ductless air conditioner or heat pump over installing the conventional ducted split system air conditioner or heat pump.
A few of the possible areas where some can use a mini-split ductless heat pump or air conditioner are rooms over the garage where additional heating and cooling is necessary simply because rooms over garages suffer because garages in most homes are not as insulated as is other parts of the home.
Trane Chilled Water Systems – Multi-Zone Air Conditioning Systems - This Trane HVAC chiller serves four different apartments. Chilled water systems offer a great way for multi-zone air conditioning. From small apartment buildings to large commercial buildings chilled water systems can serve multi-zone air conditioning systems. (more…)
Heat Pump Problems | HVAC Heating & Cooling - Heat Pumps are very popular especially in the South where air source heat pumps are mostly favored over straight air conditioners with a gas furnace for heating. With a heat pump, one system can provide heating and cooling. Some people rely on a geothermal heat pump system or a water source heat pump. A geothermal heat pump extracts heat from the ground instead of the air like an air source heat pump works. (more…)
HVAC Tip - Having the proper humidity levels in your home or business is important not only for your health but also the amount of energy your HVAC systems use to keep you comfortable. If the humidity level is high in the summer you will not feel comfortable. If the humidity level is low in the winter you will not feel warm when the thermostat is set for an average temperature. This will result in turning the thermostat up to compensate and you will use more energy to stay comfortable. A properly designed and installed HVAC system will keep the proper levels of humidity in your home or business and save you money in energy costs by reducing the amount you use the HVAC system. For more information on humidity and maintaining the proper levels of humidity in your home please visit our humidity technical pages.
