Boiler Pipe Insulation - Energy Efficiency - Richard, I have lots of my boiler pipe under the house in a crawl space and some in the basement, and none of this pipe is insulated. I just bought the house last year and this past winter my gas bill was crazy high. Can I increase efficiency by insulating these pipes and what are some other ways to keep the gas bill lower by optimizing the boiler system?

Leaking Air Handler- Air Leaks - Dear Richard… my partner and I moved into a brand new mill conversion/rehab condo last year that we absolutely love, but after the summer was over, I went into the utility closet (where the air handler/gas furnace are) and noticed that there was copper corrosion crust/rust that had run down from the air handler (not sure from where, but somewhere fairly high up on the AHU). It had dried up, and didn’t seem to be enough to run down the sides of the burner even–no streaks). (more…)

This is an air conditioner condensation drainpipe that drains the condensation from the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil operates below the dew point when the system is in air conditioning mode. As humid air passes over the cold evaporator coil the humidity or moisture in the air condenses. The condensation runs down the coil and into a condensation drain pan. (more…)

Boiler Supply and Return Piping - Any heating pipe system will experience a heat loss in the pipe even when the pipe is insulated. The loss is far greater when the pipe is uninsulated. Good boiler piping insulation will reduce the heat loss experienced in the pipe run throughout the loop especially where the pipe runs in unconditioned or unheated spaces where heating is not necessary.
Boiler Supply and Return Piping
Good Supply and Return Insulated Pipe will increase the efficiency of the boiler and reduce overall the heat loss of the entire system as a whole throughout the heating season. Insulate exposed piping wherever you find it and replace old insulation that is falling off. Be careful to identify the correct insulation and never ever disturb asbestos insulation. Asbestos is dangerous especially if you breathe in the particles from it. A professional asbestos remediation company must be hired to remove it safely.
