Lennox Versus York Air Conditioners | HVAC Buyers Advice

Lennox Versus York Air ConditionersLennox Versus York Air Conditioners - Here is a Lennox and York comparison for their premium model air conditioner as requested by a reader of the site. Just off the top of my head, both systems are good systems. I would say Lennox had a slight advantage but the first-hand experience in the field gives most HVAC technicians the opinion that Lennox is over-engineered. (more…)

HVAC and Electrical Fundamentals | Heating, Cooling, and Electrical

HVAC and Electrical Fundamentals
HVAC and Electrical Fundamentals - Electricity is usually produced by a generator at a power station and delivered to sub-stations for distribution to homes and businesses. Electricity can also be produced using chemicals like the chemical processes produced in batteries. There is also static electricity which is generally produced from friction and is oftentimes uncontrollable like lightning. (more…)

Converting an Air Conditioner to a Heat Pump

Converting an Air Conditioner to a Heat Pump
Can I convert my air conditioner to a heat pump?
Yes you can do this if you:

I get this question a lot in my emails and wanted to address it. The time and materials it would take to change an air conditioner into a heat pump are not worth it. You would be better off having a new heat pump installed replacing the old air conditioning unit. For me, or another HVAC technician, this would be a pet project for teaching students how to braze for refrigeration and wire heat pump controls for the proper sequence of operation.

It would be a good lesson in metering devices for air conditioners and heat pumps. It would also be a good lesson in finding all the appropriate parts for the size and model number of the air conditioner equipment.

TXV or Thermostatic Expansion Valve | Refrigeration for HVAC

TXV or Thermostatic Expansion Valve are used in air conditioners and heat pumps to meter refrigerant.

TXV or Thermostatic Expansion Valve

The TXV or Thermostatic Expansion Valve is preferred over other refrigeration metering devices because it only allows a specified amount of refrigerant to flow based on demand. Any type of refrigeration metering device creates a pressure drop in the refrigerant and with a pressure drop of the refrigerant a temperature drop also occurs.

This temperature is necessary to drop the refrigerant down to temperature lower than ambient temperatures inside the structure being cooled. This allows the refrigerant to absorb the heat contained in the air passing over the evaporator coil. (more…)

Window Unit Air Conditioners Heat Pumps | HVAC Portable Units

Window Unit Air Conditioners Heat Pumps
Window Unit Air Conditioners Heat Pumps – First of all, window unit air conditioners are a popular way of providing cooling in small to medium-sized rooms. Window unit air conditioners are easy to install. They usually only require someone with the strength to lift the unit into a window and secure it. Then you plug it in and turn it on. It’s that simple and is the closest thing to plug-and-play air conditioning you can find. (more…)

Heat Pump Types | HVAC Heating

Trane Air Source Heat Pump Condenser

Heat Pump Types - There are different types of heat pumps available on the market today. A heat pump is an air conditioning unit that cools when the temperature is hot and heats when it is cold. There are many different types of these heat pump systems available. There is the geothermal heat pump. It can either utilize a series of closed-loop water pipes buried in the ground or other methods of heat exchange.  This process removes or absorbs heat for heating and cooling.

Air source heat pumps can be configured differently. One type of air source heating will utilize electric heating for backup heating while another may use a gas furnace for backup heating. These types of systems can also be split systems or package units and nearly all share a similar heat pump sequence of operation. A description of the various types of systems and how they work is below in this article on heat pump types. These systems utilize similar heat pump components but differ in how the heat pump works.
