Chiller Evaporator Barrel
Chiller Barrel Evaporator – A chiller evaporator barrel exchanges heat between one refrigerant and another. Usually, the primary refrigerant is R-22, R-134A, or some other blend or alternative HFC. The secondary refrigerant is water. This water is circulated throughout the building where it passes through piping and coils. This is generally in most cases a forced air coil where the heat is removed from the air by a heat exchange process with the water and the coil. The cooler air is then forced through ductwork and into the space to be conditioned. (more…)

Trane Gas Furnace Efficiency Factors – This is a Trane gas furnace. It is also called a Trane 90 plus gas furnace because it offers efficiency levels up to 90 percent plus AFUE (rating). Gas or oil furnaces generally cannot achieve efficiency at 100% because of impurities in the fuel including moisture. This is the reason why no fossil fuel furnace sold has a rating of up to 100%.
This biggest impurity in many fuels is moisture which is difficult to remove because it is in the distribution and storage places where the fuel is distributed and stored. If these impurities were removed from the fuels before they have been introduced to the furnace the cost of the fuel would be much higher and the cost to benefit ratio would not be effective. (more…)

Boiler Commissioning Functional Testing - Commissioning (Cx) any type of HVAC equipment is many different procedures from the beginning of the commissioning process to the end of the process. One of the most important procedures during the Cx process is functional testing. Functional testing always precedes the final testing where a test of all the combined equipment is done in an integrated systems testing. Once successful testing is completed and all discrepancies corrected a final commissioning report is generated including all the test data and information collected during the entire process of testing and commissioning.
This is simply a basic set of tests to be performed for boiler functional testing. Each system is different and will require a different tailored test based on equipment submittals, control programs, and design documents. The pre-functional checklist should be complete before engaging in this test.

Proper Refrigeration Piping Installation Practices – Installing a new air conditioning and heating system requires skill and knowledge of proper procedures in electrical wiring, controls wiring, and pipework. On commercial projects, a skilled electrician handles the electrical hookups, a controls technician handles the control wiring, and a pipe fitter handles the pipework, including the refrigeration piping, which can include chilled water and refrigeration pipework. Thermostat Wiring Diagrams - Heat pumps are wired for HVAC control far differently than air conditioning systems so make sure you know the difference and correctly identify the type of HVAC system you have installed. Additionally, before you decide to change your thermostat, make sure you have the correct tools especially a screwdriver and wire pliers.
The charts listed here will help you with a heat pump thermostat and an air conditioner thermostat. Either of these can be a regular digital thermostat or a programmable thermostat. Lastly, these thermostat wiring diagrams will help you wire a new thermostat. An air conditioner cooling system is different than a heat pump heating and cooling system. (more…)

The Honeywell Y8610U Intermittent Pilot Retrofit Kit
Conversion of a Water Heater to Electronic Ignition - This article covers converting from standing pilot to electronic ignition. So you are tired of relighting the pilot light every so often or replacing the thermocouple on your standing pilot gas water heater. You want to replace the standing pilot gas valve with an electronic ignition gas system so you can never have to ever worry about lighting another pilot light again. How do you do this? You can refer to this article about changing a standing pilot gas boiler system to electron ignition for additional information.

Basic Thermostat Wiring Colors - Air Conditioner Systems - Always remember when changing a thermostat for a new thermostat to take a photo of the colors and where they go on the old thermostat or get a pencil and paper and write it down. It is better to take a good up-close photo of the old thermostat and what terminals the colored wiring are terminated. Nearly everyone has a camera on their cell phone. (more…)

How to Test a Thermocouple for a Water Heater – Everyone who has owned a gas heater including furnaces or water heaters will know that from to time you have to light the pilot light unless you have the electronic ignition that automatically lights the pilot light.
Sometimes when you try to light the pilot it does not want to stay lit. You know you have a problem. Often times the problem turns out to be a bad thermocouple that needs to be replaced. But how do you know if the thermocouple is bad? Additionally, is it the thermocouple that is the problem, or is it something else?
