Air Conditioner Ductwork Leaks | Leaky Duct Work - A good consideration when replacing the air conditioning system is the ductwork.
Red Arrow Shows a Duct Work Leak
Ductwork seems to be the most ignored part of an HVAC system. However, it is a very important consideration in this age of new technology and higher energy-efficient equipment being developed and manufactured. You can have the most energy-efficient engine but if it’s in an old 60 or 70’s model car your efficiency is going to suffer. The same is true with HVAC systems. (more…)
This is a brand new installation and the ductwork was leaking. Older ductwork definitely leaks and can cause a dusty environment
Trane Air Handler Making Dust | HVAC Troubleshooting - I would appreciate someone in the Trane organization that would please tell me why since installment and still 5 years later my house is nothing but a dust pit. I am not exaggerating. You can wipe dust blankets DAILY off my walls, floors, furniture. I have been, since the installation, asking someone to help me.
My original installer put a filtering system “like used in coal mines” - did not help. I have had independent HVAC inspectors who cannot understand nor have any reasoning for the dust. One thing was that the original TRANE installer did not put sufficient air return duct in my house.
CAN SOMEONE HELP OR AT LEAST GIVE ME AN ADDRESS/TELEPHONE NUMBER WHERE I CAN CONTACT THE MAKER/OWNER OF TRANE?
This is an air conditioner condensation drainpipe that drains the condensation from the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil operates below the dew point when the system is in air conditioning mode. As humid air passes over the cold evaporator coil the humidity or moisture in the air condenses. The condensation runs down the coil and into a condensation drain pan. (more…)
Condenser Coil Repair - A crane is used here to lift a new condenser coil to a rooftop. The old condenser coil was leaking and could no longer be repaired. The process involved recovering all the refrigerant from the Trane rooftop unit.
The rooftop unit was then partially disassembled and the old coil cut out from the system taking great care and planning to ensure the new coil could be retrofitted to the old refrigeration piping system.
Good planning and skilled HVAC techs make the jobs go smoothly and make the replacement seem easy especially to the customer. (more…)
Converting an Air Conditioner to a Heat Pump Can I convert my air conditioner to a heat pump? Yes you can do this if you:
I get this question a lot in my emails and wanted to address it. The time and materials it would take to change an air conditioner into a heat pump are not worth it. You would be better off having a new heat pump installed replacing the old air conditioning unit. For me, or another HVAC technician, this would be a pet project for teaching students how to braze for refrigeration and wire heat pump controls for the proper sequence of operation.
It would be a good lesson in metering devices for air conditioners and heat pumps. It would also be a good lesson in finding all the appropriate parts for the size and model number of the air conditioner equipment.
Ductwork Integrity and Insulation - So you are having a new HVAC system installed and you selected a system that is high efficiency and you want to get the most out of it. Have you looked at or has the HVAC contractor looked at the ductwork and determined if it is good enough for the high-efficiency system.
A good HVAC contractor would look at the ductwork to make sure it is adequate and sized properly for the new system. This is often done as the HVAC contractor wants to ensure that the new system is properly matched to the HVAC ductwork lest the system not work as it should. Beyond that, the most overlooked part of the ductwork is the ductwork integrity.
HVAC Tip - HVAC Preventive Maintenance: Just like a vehicle needs preventive maintenance, HVAC systems need a regular maintenance schedule. Having maintenance performed on your air conditioning and heating systems now can help you avoid costly repairs in the future. Air Conditioning and heating preventive maintenance also pays for itself by making the unit more efficient, safe, and reliable. Often, a technician can spot a ten dollar part that needs replacing now where if it is let go and not replaced, can cost you hundreds of dollars more in the future. The old phrase is true, "pay me a little now, or a lot later." I see it every day. Basic maintenance on condensers and air handling units will save you money in the long run. If your local heating and cooling company offers maintenance agreements look into getting one for your home or business. Typically, companies offering maintenance agreements waive overtime charges for after hours or emergency calls and offer you reduced prices on parts. That is in addition to performing preventive maintenance twice annually.
