Condensing Unit Frozen Wont Turn Off - What you can expect to learn from Condensing Unit Frozen won’t Turn Off article: this article is an answer to a question taken from our email by a visitor to High Performance HVAC. We often use the questions we get in the email as a guide to writing articles. The topic is a condensing unit that will not turn off, and it is freezing up. From my experience in the field and using my HVAC knowledge, I offer the readers a list of what could cause this problem. We hope it helps you. What’s the possible problem with a frozen air conditioner condenser that won’t turn off except with the breaker? (more…)
Crankcase Heaters and Compressors | HVAC Refrigeration. Hello, I have a question about crankcase heaters and compressors. I am aware that they keep the refrigerant from saturating in the compressor when not running. However, if the refrigerant is R-22, it becomes saturated at approximately 40 degrees. We know the a/c is only operating at warm ambient temperatures. When it is off for the evening hours & the ambient temps stay above 40 degrees, why would one need to have a crankcase heater? Why do we need it on during this temperature range, or are crankcase heaters designed to be activated only during the colder months? Also, if one installs unregulated crankcase heaters (always operating), can this be a negative factor for the compressor life? (more…)
Types of HVAC Thermostats | HVAC Control There are many different types of thermostats. Thermostats also have various levels of complexity. Below is a list of the basic thermostat types. As we have time we will update the list to make sure it is as comprehensive as possible. (more…)
Thermostat Selection Guide - This article will help you select the right type of thermostat for the HVAC system you have installed. It offers a comparison matrix for you to choose the right thermostat replacement. Get it right the first time!!!
So you have made a choice to replace the thermostat in your home or business and you decided to do it yourself. Hopefully, you will follow the advice on this website and read the instructions before replacing the thermostat.
Air Conditioner Ductwork Leaks | Leaky Duct Work - A good consideration when replacing the air conditioning system is the ductwork.
Red Arrow Shows a Duct Work Leak
Ductwork seems to be the most ignored part of an HVAC system. However, it is a very important consideration in this age of new technology and higher energy-efficient equipment being developed and manufactured. You can have the most energy-efficient engine but if it’s in an old 60 or 70’s model car your efficiency is going to suffer. The same is true with HVAC systems. (more…)
What Happens When My Boiler is Flooded - Richard, What Happens When My Boiler is Flooded? - Hurricane Irene was a disaster for us as we live in a Northern state that was hit by flooding from the rain of Hurricane Irene. As a result of the loss of power and the flooding, the basement was flooded.
Our boiler happens to be in the basement and we will soon need the heat. We have had a few contractors come by and look at the boiler with one contractor telling us we need to replace the boiler and another telling us we can rebuild the boiler. It is a little overwhelming given that winter is just around the corner and we need our heat. (more…)
This chilled water unit is a new ammonia chiller. This unit is also unique in that it has no compressor. Instead, it uses the chemical properties of ammonia and heat from natural gas to condense the refrigerant which is ammonia. A chiller provides chilled water to a chilled water loop. (more…)
Hot Water Boiler Economizer PreHeater | Energy Efficiency - This is a hot water economizer and is a big preheater for domestic hot water use. This hot water boiler plant serves a large community for heating and domestic hot water use. Domestic hot water is used for showers, washing dishes, laundry, etc, etc, etc….
The cold water supply from the city is routed through the economizer to be pre-heated before it goes through a heat exchanger and then the hot water storage tank. (more…)
Variable Frequency Drives VFDs | Energy Efficiency - In HVAC variable frequency drives add energy efficiency and precise control for fans and pumps. The VFDs offer demand control for airflow and water in chilled water systems, hot water systems, and air handling systems. Additionally, they are used to control airflow in a variable air volume system. More on how VAV boxes work.
VFDs require inverter duty motors and variable frequency drives can be purchased for three-phase and single-phase applications although the vast majority of variable frequency drives are used in commercial three-phase applications. (more…)
HVAC Tip - According to studies done by the Department of Energy, 50 percent of the heat loss experienced in the average home occurs through the ceiling. That makes a lot of sense since heat rises. You can reduce that heat loss (heat gain in the summer months) by adding another layer of insulation in the attic. That will hold more heat in our homes for a longer period of time which means the furnace will cycle less. That means you are going to save money. A lot more money than another layer of insulation costs. Additionally, having an attic fan controlled by a thermostat installed in your attic will remove a lot of heat in the summer. This will help you, in addition to having more insulation, reduce heat gain from the attic in the summer.
