Hot Water Boiler Reset Control - Richard, We are looking at replacing our boiler with a new hot water boiler. The HVAC contractor, I suppose he is the salesman for the HVAC contractor, is trying to sell us what he refers to as a reset control for our boiler. He tells us it will save us more money by making our boiler more efficient. I think I understand how it works but my wife is not entirely sure about it. Can you tell us what you think about a boiler reset control and how it works?
Thanks, and we have learned so much from High Performance HVAC. And keep up the good work.
VAV Box Types Fan Powered and Shut Off VAV Boxes - When attempting to name the different types of VAV boxes we find there are different names given to VAV boxes by different people and we find that no one is on the same page when VAV boxes are definitively defined.
We have fan-powered VAV and non-fan-powered VAV’s and we have series and parallel VAV’s and we have VAV boxes with a hot deck and a cold deck that mixes and one of the last projects I worked on some of the VAV’s were referred to as shut-off vavs. Variable Air Volume Boxes (VAV Boxes) regulates airflow into zones using a primary air source from a VAV air handler.
VAV Box Types Fan Powered and Shut Off
Cool only single ducted series
Fan-powered single duct series with reheat
Fan-powered single ducted parallel with reheat - uses plenum air before using reheat for energy efficiency
Aside from the control aspect of VAV boxes, pneumatic, electric, electronic, or DDC, there are many different variations to VAV Boxes and we will attempt to define each type of VAV including offering a diagram of each type and matching it with a specific application. VAV boxes are simply an assembly of a damper, damper controls, and sometimes reheat such as electric heat strips or a hot water coil. VAV boxes get their primary air source from a central VAV air handler and then distribute air throughout a specific zone the VAV box controls.
Rooftop Air Handler with Heat Recovery - This large rooftop air handling unit also has a heat recovery wheel integrated inside the AHU itself. The all-in-one AHU and heat recovery unit saves energy by recovering heat. The heat would otherwise be vented outside in the wintertime. Additionally, in the summer it removes heat from the air that is used for economizer and minimum outside air. (more…)
Natural Gas Properties and Furnace Heating Efficiency - Natural Gas is a popular fuel used for heating systems in America and other countries. If we look at the properties of natural gas and the heating efficiency of natural gas furnaces we will see that natural gas furnaces lose efficiency because of what is contained in natural gas as it is delivered to your home for consumption by your natural gas furnace.
Natural gas in its raw form coming straight from the ground needs to be refined to remove impurities that should not be contained in natural gas. As you read below you will see that in the refining process moisture is removed from the natural gas however during the refining process some of the moisture in the natural gas remains and therefore this affects the efficiency of your natural gas furnace.
