When you buy a water heater efficiency is important. You want to look at the efficiency of the water heater including the amount of insulation the water heater has to reduce heat loss even in the off cycle. An automatic vent damper, for gas or oil water heaters, also helps to save energy by closing the vent in the off cycle. The prevents heat from escaping when the water heater is turned off.
For electric, oil, or gas you want heat traps installed on the water lines so it prevents hot water from migrating causing the water heater to cycle unnecessarily. All these things add up to saving for you in the future for saving water heater energy costs.

For example, if you have a big family you likely want a quicker recovery rate so you don’t run out of hot water. Furthermore, if everyone in the family takes showers between 7 pm and 9 pm, and you have a high recovery rate, then you don’t have to worry about the last few people not having enough hot water. State Tankless Water Heaters
In the Energy Star criteria guideline, these are referred to as instantaneous water heaters. Tankless water heaters have many different uses that include using them for domestic hot water. Additionally, you can use them for radiant heating applications. Proper sizing is necessary for the intended use. Furthermore, tankless gas-fired water heaters that are condensing do not require the use of a conventional flue or chimney. Special PVC piping can be used for venting.

Warranties for Condensing Heaters
It is important, if you purchase a condensing water heater, that you get a good warranty for the heat exchanger. State does a good job with their heat exchanger warranty by offering a 15-year limited warranty. Other parts are included in a 5-year limited warranty for the tankless water heaters. At least the Tankless condensing water heaters we reviewed. Other models may be different. Therefore, before purchasing any product such as a condensing water heater, make sure to read the warranty and understand what you are getting. Condensing water heaters produce caustic byproducts which are corrosive to the heat exchanger.

I just had a conversation with one of your technicians I called at 1866–667-4960. I think his name may have been Kevin, but I don’t really remember because he was so condescending and rude that I had to stop speaking to him after he insulted me twice, and I hung up. First of all, the VRU I HAD to go through twice could not recognize the serial number I provided.
Once I was able to reach a live person, named Taneesha (unsure of spelling but that’s how it sounded) she took the SN and entered it, apparently able to “find” it in the warranty system. Then I was transferred to a technician who wanted the SN AGAIN! I described my problem as not being able to light the water heater pilot. I told him I tried to do it manually and he said I should not have done that, and that I needed to have a plumber come to inspect and evaluate the unit. A plumber??? I asked why.
He said I had “altered” the unit by removing an external metal panel to see inside where the burner and pilot were located. He “claimed” this had altered the unit and the warranty was no longer in effect. Now, I just have to say that is about THE STUPIDEST LOAD OF HORSE HOCKEY I HAVE EVER HEARD!!!
The manual even says to do that in order to visually determine if the lighter is producing a spark to light the pilot (which it was not). The Idiot Tech was far more focused on chastising me and telling me what I should NOT have done than helping me in any way to get my water heater working. I must sincerely say this is probably THE WORST example of customer support I have EVER had!!!
If you can’t find people with enough common sense and courtesy to deal with customers in a damn crisis, then maybe you shouldn’t BE in business. I would dearly love for someone at a management level to contact me LIVE, and leave a message if I don’t answer the phone, to discuss this deplorable experience. Thank you (for nothing basically.)

Had plumbing and heating Co. install GTS 340-NIH in 2014. Initially worked great, after 5yrs mother board went, just after warranty. The cost was almost at the point of debating of just replacing the unit… which I should have done. Past 2yrs constant issues, finally giving up on it and will be replacing with something else. Completely unreliable system, do not recommend.
TL,DR: Broke after 5 months, 3.5 hrs wait time for every support call and the issue is still to reach technical support. Call center play ping pong between units.
I got the water heater installed in Aug and it failed after 5 month. The LED on the panel is blinking 6 times. I called customer support number and after 50 minutes wait, the call center picked up (I understand the COVID situation and reason for long wait). 5 minutes in the call, the gentleman created the ticket and transfer me to another division that provided tech support for Gas units. I waited for 3.5 hours (seriously) and a lady answered. As soon as I could unmute my phone, she hung up.
The issue is still going on, and I am again holding the call for almost 2 hrs now. I am option less right now because the only way to get support is the call center with no alternative. The product and service is the worst I ever experienced.
Reading these comments, makes me think that something has changed over the years with State water heaters. I would be interested in knowing when AO Smith bought State Industries.
The reason for this comment is, I’ve had a gas State water heater since 1989. Now a couple of things come to mind, hard water and flushing the heater twice a year.

Thanks I was looking in to buying a State water heater because the Service man from PG&E did a gas leak check for me said to buy State?? We are going to have PEX tubing installed and want to start fresh?? Will do more checking before we buy????
Terrible water heater. Customer service didn’t care. First one lasted 3 yrs. Second one lasted 3 yrs. Bought a different brand this time. Stay away from STATE.

I have lived in a brand new 3600 square foot house with 4 bathrooms for three years. At the 2 1/2 year mark, the pilot light on our State water heater started failing. The plumber informed me that the cause was the new federal safety measures which stated that the flame had to be fully encased (so that idiots that place thier gas cans by the water heater don’t blow themselves up). Being fully encased, there is a gas regulator that had to be replaced on the front of the unit (about $300). About two months later, the State water heater started failing again. The same plumber came out and cleaned the filter on the front and screen on the bottom of the inside of the heater, and replaced the heating element at no charge (good plumber!). He told me that Whirlpool has had the same issues (and lost a class action lawsuit) with their enclosed system. Now the State heater is working fine (cross your fingers!). My plumber recommended that when the State heater does go out, that I replace it with a Bradford White. He states that he never has problems with them. It is very disconcerting that we have had that conversation when my State water heater is only 3 years old.

Have had problems with our gas 50 gallon H2O heater after 4 years. It was installed by our builder in our new costruction home. The heater goes into “lock-out” mode and the water comes out luke warm. We have spent over $300 in 2 different trips out to our house by a plumber. We figured it would be cheaper to fix as this is a fairly new heater. The 1st time the plumber(from the group that initially installed the unit)came out he cleaned the sensors and removed a “pan” from under the heating element that should not have been installed in the 1st place(he said)and declared it fixed. Of course, within a month the same set of symptoms occurred. We had the same plumber return he again cleaned the sensors and said it could be a few things both of which would cost over $500 in parts not to mention labor with no promise of being fixed. We are living with the problem for now as it is warm and the water is not uncomfortable but will need to have this heater replaced by winter.I promise it will NOT be a State Select!

I’ve had a 50 gallon gas hot water heater since spring og 2001 and it developed a leak today on 6/21/10. A plumber/tech came out and replaced the expansion tank and some piping. Cost was under $200 and I’m impressed by the unit overall.

State electric 56 gal.water heater just died. Installed 1988, hard well water, didn’t drain or flush it, replaced elements once ourselves. Hoping product hasn’t changed!

Four years down the line we have sold the home, with the State water heater still working satisfactorily.
The unit was less than a year old when the flooding event above occurred. I removed the burner unit and set a fan in the opening for over a week. Contrary to warnings on the unit, once the entire enclosed unit dried out thoroughly, the pilot lit and there have been no further problems.
A caution to homeowners: make sure your plumber installs the unit in an elevated position, off the floor if there is absolutely any likelihood of water flooding the unit. State will not warrant the unit if it gets submerged even a few inches. A professional plumber would be unlikely to go to the lengths I did to save it.
While I saved nearly a thousand dollars, it was an extremely cooperative family who survived over three weeks without hot water to do so. In retrospect, had I not waited a week, and had put an electric heater in the opening instead of just a fan, it would have dried much quicker.

Have a 40 year old State 50 Gallon Electric Water Heater that was installed when the house was built. I have replaced elements and thermostats as normal maintenance. Thinking about retirement and trying to upgrade everything while I am still working including the water heater even though it is still working fine. Looking at another State Model since this one has worked great.

We had a plumber install a new State water heater in July 2011. The Honeywell Gas Control valve has broken 3 times. I have spent $654.91 in less than 4 years just for labor charges to keep it working. There should be a lawsuit against State Water Heaters. This water heater is piece of junk!!!!

I just purchased a State Water Heater on Feb. 5, 2016. The unite hasn’t worked to my satisfaction yet. The water temp never seems to get above a few degrees above lukewarm. My hot water temp would get so hot with my old unit that I would have to turn it down after a few seconds. The State water heater never gets very hot. Trust me, run if someone tells you they are going to replace your unit with a State unit.

I purchased a State water heater on 9/2014. Paid a pretty penny for it with installation and all. On 2/2106 water heater failed and would not relight. Had to call a service tech out & was charged $129.50 to replace pilot assembly. The part for $30 was covered, but service tech fee to come out & labor wasn’t. Now, 2 mths later 4/2016; I have no hot water again. Tried to light pilot with no luck. Gonna have to pay another service fee & labor for someone to come out and look at it again. I wouldn’t recommend a State water heater to anyone; a non-reliable piece of junk & definitely not worth the money!!!
