Residential to light commercial York package units come in the 1.5 to 5-ton range with the efficiency ranging from 13 SEER to a maximum of 16 SEER and 80 AFUE for the York top of the line model. Package units are a difficult beast when talking about efficiency simply because the entire unit sits outside and there is much in the way of jacket heat loss as compared to a split system air conditioner, heat pump, or gas furnace where the air handler or furnace is indoors and typically installed in a conditioned space.
York Package Unit Reviews | Consumer Ratings - Features
- Select York air handlers are Energy Star rated
- 10-year limited parts warranty on select York air handlers
- Durable cabinet on select York package units
- Uses R-410A refrigerant
- 20-year limited warranty on select gas pack heat exchangers
- all aluminum condenser coil in select York gas packs (for more on this see Aluminum versus Copper article)
We recommend that you completely read and understand the warranty on any major purchase you make. Most HVAC warranties do not cover labor so if something goes wrong then labor will be your responsibility. If you purchase the top of the line models check to see if a parts and labor warranty is available for purchase.

We moved into a new house in a new development 3 years ago. Everyone in the neighborhood has the same York gas package units for the downstairs and a split system York for the upstairs. Speaking for myself and my neighbors our systems have down well for us. We do have maintenance contracts with the company that installed the systems. My neighbor had a problem with the thermostat but other than that everything else has works great.

Major Reliability Issues
This is the second York unit and both have proven to have a lot of reliability issues. When it works, it works very well but I have had a number of issues with both York units. Even though they were repaired under warranty it is a major PITA to have to deal with them.
I have another Brand-x unit sitting next to the York (the York serves the main house) and never had a minutes problem but the York fails on a regular basis.
