Weil McLain Boiler Buyers Guide
For any HVAC appliance, we always recommend you choose a good contractor over the brand. That includes boiler systems. Boilers installations are done by a plumbing contractor or an HVAC contractor. It is crucial, especially for boiler installations, that the boiler is installed correctly. This means it needs to be sized correctly and the boiler piping needs to be sized and configured properly.
Furthermore, all the controls, expansion tank, and air elimination devices need to be inspected and replaced as necessary for boiler replacements. Near boiler piping and components are important. Finally, many aspects of the boiler system need to be looked at by a competent professional. This ensures proper operation when the new boiler is put into service.
We have written an HVAC Consumer Buyers Guide to help you navigate through this process. Furthermore, it is completely free of charge and designed to help you get the best possible outcome from the purchase. Check it out and use it. We want you to get the best possible system that will give you comfort and reliability for years to come. Controls Available from Weil-McLain | For Enhanced Efficiency and Boiler Operation
Many times getting efficiency means optimized control. I know it’s more than that, but boiler control is an important factor in efficiency and saving energy. Weil-McLain has several different products available to enhance boiler operation and efficiency.
- Boiler Sequencing Control - Controls more than one boiler (up to four) in an optimized sequence.
- Circulator Zone Control(s) - For single or multiple zones (up to 6 zones).
- Outdoor Reset Control - This control changes the setpoint of the boiler based on outside air temperature.
- Zone Valve Controls - for optimized zone valve control.
- Hydronic Multi-Stage Boiler Control - for lead/lag control of multiple boilers
- Boiler Control Panels for optimized control and staging
- Boiler Modulating Control offers modulating control for up to four boilers with lead/lag rotation, adjustable modulation start point, and outdoor reset control.
What is an Outdoor Reset Control?
An outdoor reset control is a device that changes the setpoint on your boiler based on the outside air temperature. It has been tested extensively and is a proven method of reducing energy consumption therefore saving on energy costs. In some regions, if you have an outdoor reset control, you qualify for energy and tax credits/rebates.
Boiler Control Features and Additional Products
For Weil-McLain Boiler Reviews we typically include just boilers. However, Weil-McLain also manufacturers baseboards, indirect-fired heaters, heat exchangers, and controls to support their boiler systems.
Furthermore, their boiler controls include a Boiler Sequencing Control for the firing of multiple boilers systems found in some light commercial applications including apartments, Outdoor Reset Controls for added efficiency in your boiler system, and Zone Controls Module for controlling several zones including zone valves and circulator pumps on a hot water boiler system.
Their Boiler Modulating Control is, in my opinion, an excellent extra feature to have for optimized control. It can control several boilers and rotate them in a lead/lag rotation schedule. It also has outdoor reset control built-in and lots of extra features designed for optimal control and efficiency.
In addition to the controls, Lastly, Weil-McLain also produces plate heat exchangers and swimming pool heat exchangers as an added attachment to a boiler loop for heating a swimming pool.

Warranties | Weil McLain Boiler Buyers Guide
Weil McLain offers industry-standard warranties for all their boiler models. It is important to understand most HVAC manufacturers offer a limited parts warranty. That means you will have to pay for labor unless the warranty states otherwise. Always make sure to read the warranty and understand all the limitations and exclusions before making the purchase. Some warranties are not transferable.
Therefore, if you sell your home, the warranty will not transfer to the new owner. Additionally, other warranties have maintenance requirements. If you do not comply, then the warranty is void.
Furthermore, condensing heat exchangers need to be tough. The condensation from gas or oil byproducts is very corrosive and causes a heat exchanger failure. Most manufacturers offer extended warranties on their condensing systems for that reason.
These warranties usually are separate from the parts warranty and with 20-year to lifetime terms. Make sure to cover yourself with a proper boiler warranty. Finally, for the premium brands, check to see if an extended boiler part and labor warranty are available.
Gas Furnace Pricing, Efficiency, and Return On Investment (ROI) Factors

I built my house in 1992 and installed a Weil McLain Gold GV-4 with 3 zone valves. For many years the boiler heated my house just fine but this year it got cold and we could not get the boiler to keep the house warm. When it was below zero, our rooms were 58 degrees. The plumber replaced the zone valves, the circular pump, the igniter, the control modular and the gas valve. He made 3 house calls to do this and it cost us over $ 2,000. The igniter was out and nothing worked so it was needed. My question is what else could be wrong with this unit that would cause it not to keep up with the needed heat?
Providing heat for almost 30 years is remarkable. Next time, I would find a better plumber. Sounds like your current one is a parts changer and not a troubleshooter. HVAC companies also do this work and many are thoroughly trained specialist with boilers.
‘DESIGNED TO BREAK DOWN!’ Draft inducer replaced 3xs in 8 yrs at $863.00 a pop, totaling over $2500.00. The inducer motor is solid METAL, but the fan blades are PLASTIC and exposed to heat. The heat dries out the plastic blades and causes them to disintegrate, rendering an otherwise solid unit completely useless. Hence, an entire draft inducer replacement at 600.00 + tax + installation + more tax = a head ache and stomach ache! SOLUTION: WEIL MCLAIN NEEDS TO SPEND AN EXTRA BUCK ON ALUMINUM FAN BLADES. THERE LOSING PUBLIC TRUST.
Like the other reviewers I have had problems since day one. PSEG has been out multiple times, replaced all the motors and yet the system shuts down weekly – waking up to a 40 degree house or to no hot water.
The Weil McLain web site has an area to contact the company, but since they feel no obligation too respond to my multiple emails they may as well close the web site down. I wish my state lemon law would apply, as that is the correct term to apply to their product.
I bought a weil mclain gv90 boiler and very sorry that I did. Good Plumbers can put them in with too much trouble,BUT if the don’t have experience in fixing them then the homeowner is left with the headache of finding a contractor that knows what is wrong. THE WEIL MCLAIN people are totally out of touch with any homeowner. THEY WILL NOT HELP in anyway with support OR to just give out local names of experienced repair contractors. Their WARRANTY is absolutely disgraceful. ONE YR ….thats it…TOTALLY disgusted with the furnace/boiler sales and service.THEY should backup what they sell.
Have had nothing but problems…..we are now replacing the circuit board, I don’t think there is anything else to replace. I would never recommend this boiler to anyone.

I bought a house in Butternut Wi in 2001. It had a GV-5 Weil Mclain boiler in it. I have spent close to $2000.00 on repairs of this money pit. The things that have went bad on it are the boiler section, blower, circuit board, transformer, igniter. stainless steel burner, and the pressure switch. The only part that has not been changed is the pump. I have just gotten another bill from Wollermans Inc. for $359.22 . Shame on Weil Mclain.
Started leaking 1-2 months after warranty ran out. They would do NOTHING. It still leaks. Paid too much money to replace that soon; thought would last at least 10 years. Should have stuck with my on-demand system.
