A dual fuel heat pump is a heat pump with a gas furnace for backup heating rather than electric heat strips.
Air source heat pumps have a backup heating source. In most installations, the backup heating source is electric heat strips. Electric heat strips are very cheap to install in most cases. However, while electricity is generally regarded as 100% efficient, producing it is more costly than other heating methods. For a more efficient heat pump, consider a dual fuel heat pump, or a heat pump with a gas furnace for the backup heat source. It will be more costly to install, but your monthly bills will be reduced.

For everyone who reads this blog and the reviews can get a feeling from me that it’s not really about the brand. I’ve been in the HVAC industry for several years and can verify that every single brand has its plus and minuses, pros and cons, and every single brand will eventually have a part that will fail. Some worse than others, e.g., major components versus minor, inexpensive components. So, you can say that for me it is not about any one specific brand. I can say Trane is no different than any other brand for me. From a techs perspective, here are my views (pros and cons) for Trane:
Pro Trane Heat Pump
Trane’s, overall, makes a good product. I’ve seen minimal major problems with any Trane product. I worked for a Trane dealer for a time and saw a few service bulletins. They do release service bulletins to their dealers, which helps resolve issues ahead of time before they become major problems. They have a good training program, including some requirements for NATE-certified technicians (the last time I checked).
For a technician, the factory training classes are invaluable for junior and senior technicians. Many Trane dealers do send their techs to these training classes sponsored by Trane.
Cons Trane Heat Pump
The only really bad thing I’ve seen with Trane was at one time the company I worked for had several new installations where the Trane compressors were DOA. These were basic Trane compressors (which are red) and brand new out of the box; the compressors were dead. I figured somehow we got all the condensers where the compressors were made on a Friday.
So we replaced them, and it was all at no cost to the customer because it was a brand new installation. Trane compressors are easy to replace. No soldering. It was bigger flare connections. So recovery of refrigerant, pull the old compressor, install new compressor, pull a triple evacuation, wire everything, add the new charge, make some quality checks, and let her rip. For a long time, I was not a fan of aluminum coils over copper coils. My personal preference is because copper is easier to repair, and it is more efficient for heat exchange. A few other reasons also. I’m coming around, though.

Lastly, Trane makes a good heat pump system, and they have a very well-developed network of Trane-certified dealers. These dealers are required to send their technicians to various Trane technical classes. Additionally, Trane requires that some of the technicians be NATE certified. That means the Trane dealer who sells you the product is likely to have trained and qualified technicians.
Trained service and installation technicians who are excellent for the end consumer. Any manufacturer can make the best heat pump in the world. However, if it is not installed properly, it will not be the best as designed and engineered. This makes it super important for you to select a good HVAC contractor to install the system.

We have always had Trane heat pumps even when they were G.E. and they would run and Run last forever.
I have a two 2008 Trane XL20i 4TWZ0060 for the down stairs and 2009 Trane XL20i 4TWZ0036 for the upstairs . They both have twin Recip compressors and I have had only minor problems out of them but there great.
5 years ago I replaced 3 of my rental proprieties with Trane 13 and they have been nothing but problems.I have had 4 compressors installed replaced ,yes one of them twice and Trane has bragged and bragged about there Climatuff compressors for years. Well they are full of crap ,Trane don’t make there own compressors anymore. They don’t even use Copeland every one of them had L.G. compressors in them.
I was told that when Rand bought Trane they have ruined them. Look if they don’t want to make there own compressors fine but don’t keep calling something Climatuff when its not.
I will never buy another Trane anything ever again . I am a Mitsubishi convert , there heat pumps are hot and run forever and are silent.
bought my 16 seer trane suppose to lower electric usage mine went up 11 per cent. 2 weeks after installing my new trane had a heat wave in to the 90 tried to lower temp from 81 down to 79 and it took 9 hours to lower temp. could not get company that installed to do any thing. How does that sound for a trane wreck?
I’ve had my Trane for 25 years. Only had a problem when it first was installed and it was the emergency heat element,, which they replaced right away. No problems for 25 year till now. Leaking freon. Buying a new heat pump but pricing is making me think about a different heat pump. A little nervous since Trane lasted 25 yrs but we all know anything isn’t make like it use to be.
a new 16i installed in July 2018 in Florida Had our thermostat on 81 outside temp 92 turned down to 78 took 8 hours to lower temp 3 degrees installer said everything was ok . Winter now temp 65 outside turned inside heat up from 70 to 72 and axillary heat come on no mater what outside temp is . installer does not want to talk what do I do? I am retired and live on social security. My utility bill went up 4% since installing a trane. Thanks in advance for any help
Paid $8000.00 to have 2,5 ton installed in 2003. Bought the 10 year warranty. Ran great for 10 years. Leak in inside unit was first issue. Replaced at $1400.00 less than 2 years ago. Gave out again this summer. This time compressor is gone. Replacement cost another $1400.00. Didn’t bother to fix. Just using the electric backup element. No way have I saved on my electric bill what this has cost me. Maybe not just Trane, but my advise to anyone would be pay the extra $100.00 on your electric bill and forget the heat pump.
Six years ago we replaced a fairly new Carrier with our current Trane heat pump. The Carrier got flooded out in a flood and the HVAC and insurance said it needed to be replaced. The Carrier guy was too busy for us so we got Trane. In 6 years we haven’t has a single problem whereas the Carrier we had to call for repair twice in the 2 years we had that system. I’ve seen other reviews about Trane on other sites that have been terrible so I have to question it because our Trane system has been great.
Can’t complain about my Trane system. My sister has one and says she doesn’t like it. She won’t tell me why but everytime I go to her house it seems comfortable. On a scale of one to 10 for saving on my electric I give it a 10. For comfort I give it a 10. About the only thing I don’t like about it is sometimes it makes a funny noise but its not so bad. The tech told me it was switching modes.
