Troubleshooting Broken Thermostats
What do I do if my furnace is not stopping after reaching temperture it is supposed to stop at? Oder furnarce, my husband just changed the thermostat to a digital one. He believes everything is ok with thermostat because he put the old one back on & another one & this problem stayed the same.
He changed the transformer & relay & that didn’t help. He was told it was the anticipator but if that is in the terrmostat it’s not in the one we have.
First check to make sure the thermostat wires are not touching. If the white wire and the read wire are touching the furnace will not shut off as the circuit for heat will always be closed. If he changed the transformer then he blew it while changing the thermostat because he did not turn the power off first. That happens a lot. But double check the wiring to make sure the red and the white wires are not touching somewhere.
If you have digital thermostat then disregard the above information and check the thermostat manufacturers instructions for any additional settings in the installers menu. This is usually a hidden menu and you need the instructions (installers instructions) to find how to get to it.
Another possibility is you have a stuck relay or bad circuit board. For that problem you need to call in an HVAC technician to troubleshoot the problem and make the repair. I am curious if the furnace shuts down when you turn the set point down to the say 50 degrees? If it still does not shut off then yes I would say it is a stuck relay or bad circuit board and needs to be replaced/repaired.
