Infrared Radiant Heating systems provide comfortable heat in larger areas and spaces such as garages, warehouses, and other open spaces where other types of heating systems are not practical or efficient. Infrared radiant heat works through thermal radiation transmitting heat to large objects including floors and walls.
These large objects heat up through thermal radiation and then release that heat to the surrounding air through convection making the open space or open area comfortable for the occupants. (more…)
Types of HVAC Thermostats | HVAC Control There are many different types of thermostats. Thermostats also have various levels of complexity. Below is a list of the basic thermostat types. As we have time we will update the list to make sure it is as comprehensive as possible. (more…)
What Happens When My Boiler is Flooded - Richard, What Happens When My Boiler is Flooded? - Hurricane Irene was a disaster for us as we live in a Northern state that was hit by flooding from the rain of Hurricane Irene. As a result of the loss of power and the flooding, the basement was flooded.
Our boiler happens to be in the basement and we will soon need the heat. We have had a few contractors come by and look at the boiler with one contractor telling us we need to replace the boiler and another telling us we can rebuild the boiler. It is a little overwhelming given that winter is just around the corner and we need our heat. (more…)
DDC Outside Air Economizer System - Outside louvers allow the DDC control system to open dampers and introduce fresh air into the building. Building automation system, or the energy management system as it is sometimes called, monitors outside air temperature and humidity and based on a calculation and opens the outside air dampers when this calculation determines a precise set point. (more…)
HVAC 3R NEMA Rated Control Panels - These control panels offer resistance to inclement weather. They house the DDC controllers for two small chillers and two air handlers. The chillers provide chilled water for air conditioning to the air handlers. (more…)
Water Heater Maintenance - There are tons of reviews for water heaters and many mention the water heater only lasted a few years. Or the water heater has rusted or corroded, and the reviewer states the water heater is a piece of junk.
I would contend that if some people performed annual maintenance, these water heaters would last many more years. Maintenance is straightforward to perform, and for those who are not the do-it-yourself types, you can call your local plumbing service provider to take care of the maintenance for you. (more…)
These evaporators serve a large complex where natural gas is unavailable. The complex needed fuel for boilers for heating and domestic hot water so these evaporators were installed too along with two very large LP tanks to handle the heating needs of the complex. As liquid propane (LP) has a specific weight of .504 (where water is 1) and propane vapor has a specific gravity of 1.5 (where the air is 1) making propane vapor 1.5 times heavier than air. (more…)
HVAC Fire Safety - I’m not sure how many HVAC technicians have heard of on-the-job horror stories. Whether the job was commercial or residential. However, I am certain they have happened as I have heard of these horror stories happening to others.
Whether you have ever heard of it happening to others or even if it has happened to you it is important that we remain forever vigilant. This is absolutely true when it comes to fire safety on the job. Especially when we are constantly using fire as a part of our job.
And especially for silver soldering (brazing), soft soldering, or even when we are working on gas or oil boilers or furnaces. Here is an account of a few things that I’ve personally experienced and the lessons learned from these occurrences.
HVAC Damper Actuator for Economizer Free Cooling - This damper actuator controls a free cooling damper for an economizer. It is part of an economizer damper system which allows free outside air cooling when the outside air temperature and humidity are ideal. In the Fall and the Spring when the outside air temperatures are mild it is unnecessary to run the air conditioning system to cool the building if the system is set up for free cooling. (more…)
Air Source Chillers provide cool water for a hydronic piping system
How Hydronics Works | HVAC Technical for Consumers - Hydronics refers to using water and chilled water, steam boilers and hot water boilers, and other methods of transferring heat using water.
A boiler or chiller is used to heat or cool the water and then the water is transferred through the hydronic piping loops to heat exchangers such as coils or baseboards where heat is transferred from the water to the air for heating and from the air to the water for cooling to provide comfort for people or a process.
Hydronics is very popular in commercial and industrial HVAC applications for heating and cooling occupants in large buildings and providing heating and cooling for equipment and machines including computers and servers. Basically in a nutshell Hydronics uses water to move heat from one place to another.
HVAC Tip - HVAC Preventive Maintenance: Just like a vehicle needs preventive maintenance, HVAC systems need a regular maintenance schedule. Having maintenance performed on your air conditioning and heating systems now can help you avoid costly repairs in the future. Air Conditioning and heating preventive maintenance also pays for itself by making the unit more efficient, safe, and reliable. Often, a technician can spot a ten dollar part that needs replacing now where if it is let go and not replaced, can cost you hundreds of dollars more in the future. The old phrase is true, "pay me a little now, or a lot later." I see it every day. Basic maintenance on condensers and air handling units will save you money in the long run. If your local heating and cooling company offers maintenance agreements look into getting one for your home or business. Typically, companies offering maintenance agreements waive overtime charges for after hours or emergency calls and offer you reduced prices on parts. That is in addition to performing preventive maintenance twice annually.
