Gas Furnace Components 2 - Gas Burners - Depending on the type of gas furnace and how the gas furnace was engineered will depend on the type of gas burners. Inshot burners generally shoot a flame into the combustion chamber where an induced draft exists. For sealed combustion chambers a forced or induced draft will exist.
There are burners with precisely drilled holes in them. Then there are slotted gas burners that extend into the combustion chamber and generally have induced draft combustion chambers. However, these can also have forced draft combustion chambers if the combustion chamber is sealed. The size of these holes and slots in gas burners will also depend on the altitude and capacity of the furnace. (more…)
Natural Gas Burners and Burner Tubes - These natural gas burners control the gas as it enters the gas burner tubes. The gas burner tubes have little holes which control the amount of gas that exits the top of the gas burner tubes. The black pipe running out of the gas valve is the manifold.
Where the gas burner tubes are connected to the manifold are little precisely drilled holes inside of brass inserts. The precisely drilled holes are engineered specifically for natural gas. The size of the holes plus the pressure in the manifold determines how much natural gas enters the gas burner tubes. (more…)
Gas Furnace is Making Too Much Noise - Richard, my gas furnace makes a lot of noise when it is running and it is somewhat annoying and sometimes bothers me when I am sleeping. It is installed in a closet close to my bedroom. What can I do to fix this gas furnace that is making too much noise? I’m growing to hate my noisy gas furnace. Jenny
Jenny, sorry to hear about the noise your gas furnace is making. I know an overly noisy gas furnace can be irritating. All gas furnaces make some noise when operating and we can break it down into three different noises. Depending on which noise your furnace is making will depend on a fix to your furnace making too much noise. (more…)
HVAC Tip - Some people refer to refrigerant as Freon. So when something is wrong with their HVAC system they say, “I have a Freon leak”. Freon is a name trademarked by Dupont for R-22. R-22 is being phased out because it contains chlorine. While Freon will soon be a thing of the past, the name Freon has found its way in our lexicon as a reference to refrigerant, any type of refrigerant.
