Large chilled water air conditioning systems offer energy savings with compressor unloaders. Most chillers have compressors in them that can reduce the energy load by unloading the compressor. this results in energy savings. These chiller compressor unloaders offer chiller energy savings by using a solenoid to hold open a valve inside the compressor so the refrigerant is not compressed in that particular cylinder where the chiller compressor unloader is open. Of course, the compressor must have multiple cylinders before this feature becomes practical so you will only find unloaders on chilled water compressors with multiple cylinders on larger chiller systems.
Compressor unloaders are control by the chiller control system or it can also be controlled by direct digital controls or some other external electro-mechanical control system. When the cooling load is reduced because the temperature of the space is at preferable temperature it becomes unnecessary to run the chiller at full load. This typically happens when temperatures are mild outside and the system is equipped with an economizer. It gives the system to operate at only fifty percent capacity when it only needs to run at fifty percent load. This feature offers excellent energy savings as compred with a system that will only run at one hundred percent capacity when only fifty pervent capacity is needed.
