Proper Humidity Levels

Having proper humidity levels in your home or business is important not only for your health but also in the amount of energy your HVAC systems use to keep you comfortable. If the humidity level in your home is high in the summer you will not feel cool. If the humidity level is low in the winter you will not feel warm when the thermostat is set at an average temperature. This will result in turning the HVAC thermostat up to compensate and you will use more energy to stay warm. A properly designed and installed system will keep the proper levels of humidity in your home or business and save you money on energy used by the HVAC System. For more information on humidity and the benefits of maintaining proper levels visit High Performance HVAC's Humidifier Page.

Before You Call

Before calling a heating and air conditioning company, check the following:
  • Check selections on thermostat. Ensure that it is set to the desired settings.
  • Check power supply. This can include a circuit breaker and or/a regular looking wall switch close to the indoor unit
  • Check for freezing up of units. If the unit is frozen turn it off. Check the filter(s) and supply vents to make sure they are not obstructed in any way. If you find no problems leave the unit turned off and call a service company.

Gaffers and Sattler Furnace with a Problem Blower Motor. Pricing and Replacement of the Blower Motor.

8) Hi! I have a Gaffers and Sattler forced air home furnace that needs a new fan blower motor. Can you answer the following questions please?
1) Do you know how much a replacement fan motor would cost?
2) Can you fax to me the specs on the motor that came with it?

3) Do you sell, or do you know who sells this replacement part?

First of all pricing on any HVAC parts is a very tricky business when saying it would cost this much or that much to replace the blower motor unless you are very specific. You can go to three different electric blower motor supply stores and get three different prices. Some blower motors just cost more than others and some businesses don't care about competitive pricing because they know they sell a superior product. Without getting into economics I can't give you specific prices on blower motors unless I have the detailed specifications and the brand name of the blower motor you want to buy. It is not in the scope of this website to sell products but simply provide technical information and offer links or other resources to help you find what you want to find. After that it's all up to you.

Secondly, from my experience as an HVAC Master with many years experience in the field the best thing you can do is to call a professional HVAC service company to repair/replace this blower motor. It may not be a bad motor but another cheaper part that needs replacing. An HVAC Professional will be able to make repairs quickly and efficiently. A good HVAC service company will also give you a one year warranty on parts and labor on any HVAC repair and this should give you peace of mind.

Finally, you will have to find a local dealer of Gaffers and Sattler to get detailed spec sheets on your furnace and blower motor. The average residential blower motors range in H.P. (horsepower is how motors are sized) 1/8th all the way up to 3/4th horsepower. Many are 208/230 or 240 volts but there are some that are 120 volts. Does the blower motor need to turn clockwise or counter clockwise and what is the amperage rating on the existing blower motor? What is the diameter of the motor? How is it mounted? A rule of thumb for electrical parts is to always use an exact replacement and many HVAC technicians do their best to find an exact replacement for the part they need but sometimes this is impossible so they will match up H.P., voltage rating, amperage rating, the direction the blower motor needs to turn, the diameter of the blower motor body and get a simliar blower motor. A professional HVAC technician has probably changed a thousand of these blower motors and knows all the ins and outs of doing this job even if an exact blower motor replacement is not available. Just having the knowledge of being able to find a replacement blower motor is one thing but knowing how to change it out quickly and efficiently is another thing which will take the frustration out of it and give you peace of mind and comfort a little quicker than if you were to do the job yourself.

Now, you have all the information here that you need to find a replacement blower motor. Shopping around for air conditioning and heating parts can be a challenge. It's up to you if you want to do it or not and spend the time finding the HVAC parts. Good luck to you and I hope you do a good job if you do it yourself.

AC unit not turning on
written by William Roberts, May 20, 2010
I have a Goodman GMN080-4 and a Fedders Flexhermetic II AC unit.

Problem, on AC mode blower will not run ON and AC will not utrn on. Blower
will run ON in heat mode and heat works fine. Could this be an incorrect hook up of new blower motor?
