Richard, I was wondering if you could give me your technical review on the following unit I am considering purchasing.

The unit is a Goodman. Model GPH15M Packaged Heat Pump, 15 seer. Also, your opinion on Goodman units in general.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Mike, Thanks for the email and your request for a technical review of the Goodman Model GPH15M Packaged Heat Pump. A good friend of mine has a relationship with Goodman dealer as an installing contractor and I forwarded your email to him to let him give his perspective on the Goodman review you requested. Here is his technical review of the packaged heat pump unit:

Richard The Goodman GPG15M Packaged Heat Pump comes from a long line of excellent package units. The Goodman line carries a 10 year warranty on parts. Just remember to register it online within 60 days of the installation (except in California or Quebec) to obtain the warranty. The 4 and 5 ton applications bring an even greater savings to the table with 2 stage compressors. All of the units in this line come with an Energy Efficient Motor and are multi-positional. This unit is also running on R-410A refrigerant, as per the new law in effect 01/01/10. That adds an extra dimension to the heating capability of the unit running without auxillary heat, because of the much higher operating pressures of R-410A as compared to R-22 at the same outdoor ambient temperatures. That translates to much higher heat of compression output flowing to the indoor coil during the heat mode, which gives you a much warmer register air flow temperature. That translates to much less of a "drafty" heat pump feeling, which I can testify to. I upgraded from R-22 to R-410A seven years ago( 7.65 SEER to 13.15 SEER), and noticed a huge difference in the air flow temps. When I upgraded last year from that Lennox unit to an Amana 18 SEER , 2 stage compressor, Variable speed outdoor fan and indoor blower, with new ductwork, I felt another distinct improvement in air flow temps in heating, and my auxillary heat strips have yet to come on, even when we were in the upper teens temperature wise recently. Even my wife hasn't been complaining at all and she is quite cold natured. I think he will be very happy with his new Goodman unit, as long as it is properly installed per the manufacturer's installation instructions and all local codes as required, to a well insulated, sized and sealed duct system. Good Luck
