Trane Air Conditioner Reviews

Trane Air Conditioners are very popular. It is no big secret that Trane has a good marketing program and budget and they lead the HVAC industry in many areas including marketing. But is Trane the best selection for you? Let’s take a look under the hood of a Trane Air Conditioner and rate and review the Trane air conditioner. I would rate Trane Air Conditioners on different levels. Trane does go above and beyond other HVAC manufacturers to ensure their dealer network has adequate HVAC training. They require dealers to send a specified number of technicians to factory training classes and they encourage dealers to get their HVAC technicians NATE certified. All these things help the end consumer because the chances are you will get a well trained HVAC technician arrive at your door step to install or service your air conditioner. Many times this is more important than anything including price, efficiency, or name brand. After everything is said and done if the air conditioner unit was not installed properly then price, efficiency, and the name brand will all suffer so Trane has a leg up on HVAC training over some other manufacturers so this will ensure you likely get a competent HVAC technician arrive to install or service your air conditioner.

Trane Air Conditioner Condenser

Next up would be quality of equipment as a factor I would hold in high regard when purchasing HVAC equipment. When I first started working on Trane equipment I noticed Trane uses spine fin coils in their condening units and the coils are made of aluminum. This bothered me for some reason partly because I didn’t think aluminum was a durable as copper used in most other HVAC manufacturers air conditioner and heat pump coils. Aluminum does have a better heat exchange ratio than copper so aluminum does win in that regard but what I really want to ask an engineer at Trane is the following question, “What kind of tests have you done to ensure aluminum coils can stand up to the test of time, vibration factors, and stresses by weather, outdoor accidental abuse (lawnmowers, weed eaters, kids and toys)?” I haven’t had a chance to ask a Trane HVAC engineer that question so perhaps one may be perusing this site and email me or leave the answer in comments. One other thing about this subject that I must say; I have never heard of a major catastrophic coil failure in a Trane unit with aluminum coils. I am sure it has happened as it has happened to other HVAC manufacturers’ coils but to my knowledge I have not heard of it happening before. I would not allow the aluminum coils to stop me from purchasing a Trane Air Conditioner if I was going to purchase a Trane Air Conditioner. Other components in the Trane Air Conditioner are typical of other manufacturers including the sheet metal cabinet, fan motors, and controls. What separates Trane Air Conditioners from other manufacturers (other than the aluminum spine fin coils) is Trane manufacturers their own compressors. The compressor is a major component in an air conditioner or heat pump system. Other manufacturers use compressors from Bristol to Copeland to other brands.
Efficiency is the next factor and this is directly related to price. The higher the efficiency of the equipment the higher the cost associated with the Air Conditioner. The major reason for this is because the system is more complex and has more controls and sometimes more components to make it more efficient. If you want an 18 SEER air conditioner it will cost more than a 13 SEER air conditioner. Of course with the 18 SEER installed properly your utility bill will be much less than if you got the 13 SEER air conditioner. The key is that it gets installed properly.

The Honeywell Touchscreen Programmable Thermostat is Honeywell’s top of the line thermostat. This is a good thermostat and very useful even if if you do not need a programmable thermostat for your HVAC system. Many people know very little about thermostats and even their HVAC systems. It helps when choosing a thermostat, especially a programmable thermostat that it is simple to operate. The Honeywell Touchscreen thermostat is easy to navigate through the menu when programming it. Using the Honeywell touchscreen it only takes about 10 minutes to set it up on initial installation and then another 10 minutes or so program the thermostat. Even people who are technically challenged will find this thermostat easy to navigate in the set up and programming menus. Honeywell lists the features and benefits for the touchscreen programmable thermostat as:

Energy Saving – Honeywell claims a savings of up to 33% on your utility bills if you follow the instructions that come with the programmable thermostat. This can be the case depending on different things but it can also be the case for any type of programmable thermostat that you get and use it in the same manner. This does not take away from the Honeywell programmable thermostat being a good thermostat. It is a proven fact that if the air conditioning and heating systems are controlled properly on a maintained schedule you will save money on the utility bills.

Easy to use Touchscreen display – absolutely true. The Honeywell Touchscreeen Programmable Thermostat is very easy to program and navigate.

Back-lit Display – the back light on the display can be programmed to stay on 24/7 or it can be programmed to turn on when you touch the screen. It will automatically turn off after a number of seconds when there is no activity on the touchscreen.

Smart Response Technology – this feature means that the thermostat will adjust itself to the time it needs to come on to heat or cool the home to reach set point at the programmed time. For example, if you come home at 6 p.m. everyday and you want the temperature to be 70 degrees F. when you arrive the thermostat will determine the appropriate time to come on so the set point will be attained at 6 p.m. If it is a mild day then the air conditioning and heating may only need to come one for a few minutes to attain the set point. If the temperature is extreme the heating or cooling may need to come on at least 30 minutes before to attain the set point. This is smart technology that saves you money. The specifics of how this works is not clear in the Honeywell literature but it must take some time for the thermostat to learn the heating cooling equipment so it will know when to turn on the equipment. Because of this assumption it may take some time before this feature will grow smart enough to function correctly until it tunes itself.

Auto Change from Heat to Cool – this is a good feature especially when the temperature swings outside drastically.

Precise Control of +/- 1 degree F. – Again this is good for accuracy.

Filter change reminder – every thirty days it will flash to remind you change or check the filter.

Vacation Hold – this is an added bonus for the Honeywell Touchscreen Programmable thermostat as many other programmable thermostats do not have this feature. If you go on vacation simply set the vacation feature and your air conditioner or heating system maintain a vacation schedule.

Permanent Day and Time – if the power goes out then the Honeywell Touchscreen thermostat holds the day and time including the program so there is no need to reprogram or reset the day and time if a power failure occurs.

Optional Daylight Savings time so the thermostat will automatically adjust for spring and fall clock changes.

Battery free operation – use the battery or use the power from the HVAC system to keep all the settings. Some programmable thermostats use batteries for the operation of the thermostat. The Honeywell Touchscreen Thermostat can use the power from the HVAC system for its primary power and then use the battery for the back-up power in case of power outage.

The Honeywell Touchscreen Thermostat is Energy Star rated and it comes with a 1 year warranty.

The Honeywell Touchscreen Programmable thermostat typical heating and cooling systems including heat pumps however the Honeywell Touchscreen Thermostat is not compatible with electric baseboard heating systems that utilize 120 to 240 Volts.

You can buy the Honeywell VisionPro Thermostats at Pex Supply: Buy the Honeywell VisionPro Thermostats

Many people who own boilers love the options available with hot water boilers and they love the fact that they can zone specific areas of their home using hydronic heating. Heating with hot water boilers offers comfortable heat that is quiet and draft-free. A hot water boiler can also be fitted with a domestic coil for domestic hot water for showers, washing dishes ect….. Burnham is a well respected boiler manufacturer producing both hot water and steam boilers of various heating capacities used mostly in heating systems in residential and light commercial markets. The Burnham Alpine Hot Water Boiler is Burnhams highest efficient boiler available. Let’s look under the hood and see what Burnham offers in the Alpine model hot water boiler.

The Burnham Alpine hot water boiler, while it looks like a refrigerator, offers efficiency to 95% AFUE in 7 sizes from 80,000 BTU’s to 500,000 BTU’s. It is available only for natural gas or propane fuels and uses CPVC/PVC or Polypropylene or Stainless steel for venting combustion gases. The Burnham Alpine is designed to use 100% outside air for combustion air. This eliminates the boiler using air from inside the structure for combustion air which is safer for the occupants. Aside from the efficiency AFUE rating of 95% the most important thing about the Burnham Alpine model boiler is that it has fully modulating boiler operating controls which means it has a wide range of firing rates based on demand. Modulating controls make this boiler an energy saver for the owner. The Burnham Alpine Hot Water Boiler is a condensing boiler with a stainless steel heat exchanger for durable and long use. The Alpine model heat exchanger boiler is also approved by ASME and the boiler ratings published by Burnham are certifed by GAMA (now AHRI).

Looking at the installation manual for the Burnham Alpine boiler you have the option of hooking up a domestic indirect fired water heater for domestic hot water use. The boiler controls are simple and easy to hook up for an installation technician and Burnham offers a great five year warranty for no additional cost. Make sure you register at Burnhams Website within 90 days of installation to get the warranty. Looking at the condensation drain it looks like it is cheap plastic but for all condensing furnaces and boilers it is best to use plastic for the condensation drains because of corrossion factors. Metal drains will corrode so the plastic drain is better for condensing boilers or furnaces. One last thing about the Burnham Alpine hot water boiler…………..it is stackable so additional boilers can be stacked one on top of the other for saving space. This makes it ideal for locations where space is at a premium. Overall, I am giving the Burnham Alpine hot water boiler a 5 rating.

Carrier Infinity Heat Pump Review

The Carrier Infinity heat pump is Carriers top of the line heat pump system. When you couple one of Carriers high SEER/HSPF rated heat pumps with Carriers Infinity™ gas furnace you have a combination that is one of the most efficient air to air systems in the world. Taking a look at Carriers products specifications, using my knowledge from my experience in the field, and from what I hear about these systems I will offer you my review of the Carrier Infinity Heat Pump System.

Carrier Infinity uses Puron refrigerant. Puroin is Carriers name for R-410A which is the new refrigerant on the market today which is an alternative refrigerant for R-22. This is good because the price of R-22 is going to go through the roof when the phase-out period begins in 2010. Actually the price of R-22 has already went up significantly because refrigerant manufacturers have begun cutting back on production. Buy a R-410A system now instead of a R-22 system and you will save money.

Efficiencies range up to 19 SEER for air conditioning and up to 9 HSPF for the heat pump. This is very good and only geothermal and few other manufacturers can beat this with air to air systems. Remember, the higher you go with SEER or HSPF the more the equipment will cost you because to get those efficiencies Carrier has to add additional or upgraded components and controls. This makes the equipment more costly on initial purchase but more efficient in the long run. With the cost of rising energy prices it is only smart to buy the most efficient systems you can find on the market today.

As low as 70 dB. This means it is quiet and this is important to many people including the neighbors.

2 Stage Compressor – this is good also. If you have read the reviews and read my articles you know that staging, step control, or modulating air conditioning and heating systems are more efficient that systems that are non-modulating or single stage. Modulating or air conditioning and heating systems that have staging only use or come close to only using the energy needed to satisfy demand.

Infinity Control - this is a fancy smancy thermostat that has added features beyond the typical thermostat. As with Tranes high end system the Carrier Infinity Control system can be hooked up to the telephone for remote control. I am wondering when they are going to hook these systems up to the internet and assign your HVAC system an IP address so your air conditioning and heating system can have its very own website. I’m not joking here………commercial HVAC systems have this already and it is a matter of time before it hits residential systems.

Silencer System – this is Carriers name for making everything quiet like a blanket for the compressor (not to keep it warm in the winter but to reduce noise.

WeatherArmor Ultra system – Carriers name for making sure the cabinet doesn’t rust and corrode after the warranty expires.

10 year compressor limited warranty and 5 year parts limited warranty – there really is nothing special about this as it is industry standard for high efficient systems.

Note: Infinity, WeatherArmor, SilenserSystem are all trademarks of Carrier and Puron is a registered name with Carrier.

Overall, the Carrier Infinity System is a good System whether you get the heat pump or you get both a heat pump and gas furnace for the back-up heat. The only drawback to Carrier is the cost of replacement parts. They tend to be higher than most for replacement costs. A friend of mine does service in air conditioning and heating and he just replaced a circuit board in a Carrier for someone and the circuit board cost over $300.00. This par for the course for a few other manufacturers so it is in your best interest to make sure you have the best manufacturers warranty available. A good warranty from the HVAC manufacturer whether the manufacturer is Carrier or someone else it means this HVAC manufacturer stands behind the quality and durability of the equipment they produce. I give Carrier 4 stars out of five for an overall rating.

RASL-JEZ Rheem Heat Pump is Rheems top heat pump and is in the Prestige Series of Rheems heat pump line up. The RASL-JEZ Rheem heat pump uses R-410A refrigerant and uses two stages to deliver up to 18.5 SEER of efficiency. For the homeowner or business person making a decision on a Rheem heat pump this heat is energy efficient and is suitable for light commercial applications. The RASL-JEZ Rheem heat pump comes with a 10 year conditional warranty on all parts and the compressor. This Rheem heat pump also comes in a variety of sizes that run between 2 tons a little over 3 tons.

Rheeem lists the features for their RASL-JEZ heat pump as (comments included):

A comfort control system that provides onboard diagnostics – there are many systems that provide onboard diagnostics. Basically it is a display board the will flash lights. The count of the flashes will tell a technician the problem. Sometimes some HVAC manufacturers will have a legend printed inside the panel that will list the flash codes. Chances are the average homeowner does not want to figure out or repair the problem. It is not recommended that the homeowner service their own equipment especially when the equipment is under warranty. Besides, since this heat pump unit is top of the line then it means the homeowner can afford to pay for a qualified technician to come out and find the problem. For thermostats that have an “L” terminal this diagnostic board can send a signal to the thermostat that will notify the user of problems. Usually this is done with a digital display or a light on thermostat. The real bonus to this Rheem heat pump diagnostic board is that it will lock out the compressor to prevent it from running if a problem is detected. Rheem calls this Active Protection.

Rheem lists (as an additional feature) a 7-segment LED display. This is a part of the diagnostics board and is designed to help the technican when troubleshooting problems. Ideally, we hope this is not necessary but if it is necessary then it is there to make the process of troubleshooting the heat pump easier.

Rheem lists as a feature a ten year conditional warranty. Always read the fine print with all warranties. You don’t want to buy a brand new heat pump thinking it comes with a ten year warranty only if you buy an additional feature or product. The warranty says CONDITIONAL so there are conditions with this warranty. What are the conditions?

Reliable 2-stage Scroll compressor. This is a good feature as it has staging. Anytime you can stage and.or modulate mechanical or electrical equipment including heat pumps it is a good thing. This is a way to use only the amount of energy you need to use to satisfy demand. One note about this feature – it is important that the controls for this are set up properly to take advantage of this energy saving feature.

Comfort Alert diagnostics – I can only assume this is a part of the Rheem diagnostic board mentioned above.

All controls are accessible by removing on panel – this is good and makes the heat pump easier to repair if repairs are necessary. This means if your heat pump needs repairs then the technician will not have to spend an extra hour disassembling the unit to change a part in the heat pump. Many HVAC Contractors charge by the hour so this feature has the potential to save you money if the heat pump does need repairs.

Louvered Wrap-around coil guard – this is good and protects the coils from damage. This feature also mentions that the heat pump cabinet is power coat painted and this makes the heat pump durable against rust and corrosion.

The air is discharged upward and away from bushes and shrubs – Rheem states that this reduces airflow restrictions but this is only true for the discharge air. If there are bushes and shrubs around the unit then the side intake will have airflow restrictions making it moot point for a discharge airflow restriction for this heat pump or any heat pump for that matter.

Exclusive Combination Grille/Motor Mount secures the motor to the underside of the discharge grille – This feature smacks of proprietary for this Rheem heat pump. This means you can’t buy just any motor to replace the condenser fan motor on this heat pump but you have to buy a condenser fan motor from Rheem if the motor goes bad.

RASL-JEZ Rheem 3 ton model heat pump uses a GE ECM two-speed motor. This is good in the regard that it matches the compressor. When the compressor is running at low capacity then the condenser fan motor runs at a low speed which means it will consume less energy. In another regard if this component fails then it expensive to replace. Make sure you abide by the conditional warranty at least for the first ten years you own this heat pump.

Complies with the salt spray test which means if you live near the ocean then the salty air will not easily corrode this unit.

Dehumidification control when matched with a Prestige series air handler or premium ECM Gas Furnace. This is a good feature to have in the summer time to remove humidity. The less the humidity the cooler you feel.

Other features listed by Rheem for this heat pump are short cycle protection, indenpendent controls for the fan and the compressor to reduce dimming lights, and other useful features that add to the safety and protection of this heat pump. High Performance HVAC gives this heat pump unit 8 stars out of 10.

Lennox G71P Gas Furnace Review

Despite the farmers overalls in the Lennox marketing program with Dave Lennox Lennox makes a good HVAC machine. Lennox is on the pricey side but you get what you pay for with Lennox. The Lennox G71P gas furnace is Lennoxs’ top of the line gas furnace model offering quiet heat that is produce efficiently by the G71P gas furnace. From reading the bullet points on the Lennox website about the Lennox G71P gas furnace I had some questions so I decided to call the 800 number and ask a few questions about the Lennox website description of the G71P. I really learned nothing more than what the website said so maybe some seasoned HVAC technicians or someone very familiar with the new Lennox models out on the market can help us out and email me or leave their response in the comments. My questions are in the bullet points. I called more than once and got the same response. The answers to my questions were read out of a book and said the same as what the website said. This is not good for Lennox in the overall review. I did have a leg up on the representatives who answered the phone but I played typical Joe Homeowner without telling them my reason for the call.

SilentComfort™technology, Variable Speed Blower Motor, Fully Insulated Cabinet – Lennox has all these features listed under Quiet Operation. Yes all these things are good for the noise level of the equipment. No questions here. I would like to add that the noise level can also depend on the ductwork you have or the ductwork that will be installed with the new furnace. It is important that the ductwork is sized to match the CFM volume of the equipment. I take it Lennox is referring to the equipment itself and not the entire system as a whole. Giving Lennox credit where credit is due Lennox does have a good dealer training program. I once worked for a Lennox dealer and had the opportunity to take advantage of some of the Lennox training.

Precise Comfort™ technology, AirFlex™ technology, Zoning, Variable Speed Blower Motor, Variable-Capacity Operation – All these are listed under Home Comfort describing the Lennox G71P Gas Furnace. Big questions under this section for the Lennox descriptions. My biggest question is this: Variable Capacity Operation? Is this not a modulating furnace? Does this only apply to the blower or does Lennox have a modulating burner to go with the variable speed blower? From the desrciption I take it as a possible yes to my questions but it doesn’t say this exactly. Next is the Precise Comfort™ Technology. Does this mean the system will eliminate temperature swings and what happens if I want to use my own thermostat instead of a Lennox thermostat? Will that void this technology and not allow it to work? Okay, so if I bought one of these babies I would use their thermostat but I am not trying to pry any secrets out of Lennox I am simply asking questions the typical homeowner would probably not ask but should. What is AirFlex™ technology? I asked that question to Lennox reps and could not find additional information on the Lennox website. Zoning is a good option for this type of system especailly since it is maybe modulating (it does have varying capacity according to the description but that is not telling me it is modulating). Variable Speed Blower is good and necessary for variable capacity and for dehumidification in the summer.

Lennox, in additional descriptions (Energy Efficiency) for the G71P gas furnace, gives and AFUE rating of 95%, they have a variable speed inducer (necessary for variable capacity operation), and it has a dual fuel capability just in case you wanted to hook it up to a heat pump and use it for back up heating for the heat pump. Many manufacturers have this option for their gas furnaces and this is the recommended back up heating for heat pumps because it is typically (depending on where you live and how much you pay for electricity) it is cheaper than having electric back up heating which most heat pumps have.

Duralok Plus® Heat Exchanger, SureLight® Igniter, SureLight® Control Board, Limited Lifetime Warranty on heat exchanger, and the ten year limited warranty are the features listed under Reliable Performance. This is all very good but I would make sure the control board was listed as one of the items on the ten year limited warranty. These boards are usually very expensive not including the labor to have a Lennox technician troubleshoot and install the board.

Overall Lennox gets a decent review from me. As I said you will probably pay a little more for the Lennox but you should receive good reliable and efficient equipment and service from your local Lennox dealer.

Overall, the Trane XC Model Gas Furnace is Tranes top of the line model but to me it is an expensive toy. If you like toys then this is for you. What do you think?

Trane Gas Furnaces Review

Trane manufacturers gas furnaces from 90 percent AFUE all the way up to 95% AFUE. Tranes XC model gas furnaces have the ability to communicate via a telephone modem (or telephone access module as Trane calls it) so you can adjust settings remotely. The XC model gas furnace also comes with a variable speed motor for changing the amount of air flow from winter months to summer months. This is especially useful for air conditioning systems which can be matched with the XC models. Variable speed motors allow the system to control humidity levels in the summer better and with better humidity control you will stay more comfortable and it adds to efficiency ratings. Some features of the Trane XC gas furnace are:

Communications Interface – according to Tranes website this feature can be used to change settings remotely by telephone. Okay, so we leave the house and forget to turn the thermostat down. This feature gives you the option to change turn the unit down so the furnace will not run all day. But wait a minute, isn’t that what a programmable thermostat is for? To automatically turn down the system so you don’t have to remember to do it before leaving the house? Maybe I am wrong but this seems like an expensive add-on toy. If it had diagnostic abilities then yes I would be all for it but Tranes website doesn’t say anything about remote diagnostic abilities. Trane just says it has the ability to change settings remotely. Until I get more this would be just a toy.

Communicating User Interface – Okay, so this is a fancy thermostat that uses only 2 wires and not 6 or 8 or 10 because it speaks binary code or some computer networking protocol language. Probably it is a proprietary thermostat you can only get from Trane and it is mucho expensive to replace if something were to go wrong.

Variable speed blower motor – This is good especially for air conditioning dehumidification. For the XC model this furnace has 3 stages of heating allowing the motor to be ramped up and down depending on the firing rate of the burners. This also adds more efficiency to the system because it is close to being a system that will run at varying capacities so you use only what you need.

3 Stage gas heat – this is also very good under one condition. That condition is that as long as it is installed and set up properly then this is a very good option for you to have in your furnace. See above in variable speed motors about varying capacity.

Heavy gauge powder painted cabinet – another good option to add durability to the gas furnace furnace.

Increased dehumidification – this is also very good…………see variable speed motors above.

silicon Nitride hot surface ignition system – this is also good as it offers a reliable way to ignite the burners.

In-shot burners – good

one-piece aluminized steel primary heat exchanger – A heat exchanger is a heat exchanger and there are many good heat exchangers. I don’t have empirical data to prove one way or the other whether this heat exchanger is better than any other heat exchanger.

24-volt fuse – this should be standard on every model or any piece of HVAC equipment that has a 24 volt transformer and that is almost every piece of residential equipment out there.

Insulated cabinet – yes this is good for two reasons. One because of heat losses through the cabinet. This heat loss is usually minimal but it is heat loss so the insulation helps prevent some heat loss. The next big issue is for quieter operation. Insulation decreases the decibel level and many people don’t like to hear machinery like a gas furnace running while they are trying to sleep or watch a movie.

Convertible horizontal left to right – this is good because it gives the installer more options. It also means Trane only has to stock a one model fits all horizontal XC gas furnace. This is a typical feature among all HVAC manufacturers.

Cleanable filter – this is okay depending what you want for indoor air quality and filtering the air.

ERV, Humidifier, and air cleaner compatible – this is good and most models come with this feature.

Overall, the Trane XC Model Gas Furnace is Tranes top of the line gas furnace model but to me it is an expensive toy. If you like toys then this is for you. What do you think?

Adams claims to have the worlds most efficient oil furnace and it has been observe that the oil furnaces get up to 99 percent efficiency

Adams Oil Furnace Reviews

Adams Manufacturing Company is one of the few companies that specialize in oil furnace manufacturing. Adams claims to have the worlds most efficient oil furnace and it has been observe that the oil furnaces get up to 99 percent efficiency using state of the art test equipment on factory tuned equipment. These oil furnaces are condensing furnaces and many manufacturers shy away from producing a condensing oil furnace for a few good reasons. A condensing furnace whether it is gas or oil produces highly corrosive vapor. This vapor corrodes metal and many heat exchangers are made of metal. An oil furnace, if not properly tuned, will produce soot and lots of soot. This is basically unburned fuel and it is very dirty. Combined with the corrosiveness of the condensing furnace vapors this soot can sit inside the exchanger and corrode it over time. In a factory witness test Adams claims to have overcome this problem by using a special type of metal for the heat exchanger that resists the corrosive effects that can lead to premature heat exchanger failure. Overall, Adams knows the business of building a solid oil furnace so oil furnace ratings and oil furnace reviews are kind to Adams Manufacturing.

Adams does offer a good training program for their dealers by sending factory representatives to the dealers for training and many of the dealers are seasoned oil dealers meaning they have a very competent staff of oil furnace technicians to install and service Adams oil furnaces.

Adams produces many different types of forced air oil furnaces from upflow, downflow, lowboy & highboy, and counterflow. Sizes range from 50,000 BTU (for residential) through 1,000,000 BTU’s for commercial applications.

Adams also produces Infrared Heaters, Unit Heaters, Gas Furnaces, Gas Burners, Oil Burners, Air Cleaners, and Humidifiers.
