Proper Humidity Levels

Having proper humidity levels in your home or business is important not only for your health but also in the amount of energy your HVAC systems use to keep you comfortable. If the humidity level in your home is high in the summer you will not feel cool. If the humidity level is low in the winter you will not feel warm when the thermostat is set at an average temperature. This will result in turning the HVAC thermostat up to compensate and you will use more energy to stay warm. A properly designed and installed system will keep the proper levels of humidity in your home or business and save you money on energy used by the HVAC System. Before You Call

Before calling a heating and air conditioning company, check the following:
  • Check selections on thermostat. Ensure that it is set to the desired settings.
  • Check power supply. This can include a circuit breaker and or/a regular looking wall switch close to the indoor unit
  • Check for freezing up of units. If the unit is frozen turn it off. Check the filter(s) and supply vents to make sure they are not obstructed in any way. If you find no problems leave the unit turned off and call a service company.

Energy Saving Tips

According to studies done by the Department of Energy, 50 percent of the heat loss experienced in the average home occurs through the ceiling. That makes a lot of sense since heat rises. You can reduce that heat loss (and heat gain in the summer months) by adding another layer of insulation in the attic. That will hold more heat in our homes for a longer period of time which means the furnace will cycle less. That means you are going to save money. A lot more money than another layer of insulation costs. Additionally, having an attic fan controlled by a thermostat installed in your attic will remove a lot of heat in the summer. This will help you, in addition to having more insulation, reduce heat gain from the attic in the summer.

Furnace Safety

Carbon monoxide detectors are important to own for those people who burn fossil fuels for heat. Carbon monoxide is a flammable, colorless, odorless, tasteless toxic gas produced during incomplete combustion of fuel - Natural Gas, Oil, Coal, Wood, Kerosene, etc. Someone suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning generally has severe headaches, nausea, and sinus problems. These symptoms generally begin with mild effects and people usually remain unaware of what the exact problems is until, sometimes, it is too late. How many cracked heat exchangers or faulty furnaces are out there that no one knows anything about except a slight headache and nausea? Don't take any chances, get your carbon monoxide detector and call your local heating and air conditioning company for a heater inspection today. Read more on this subject on the Furnace Page.

Energy Saving Tips

You can add energy savings by placing a blanket wrap insulation around your water heaters. Additionally, for electric water heaters, you can have a timer added to the power circuit to turn the water heater off in times when there is no usage. For example: Set the timer to turn the water heater off from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Most timers can be customized and set for different times so that the water heater is turned off for most of the day and night. This, along with the insulation (which will keep the water hotter longer), can save in energy usage and your energy costs.
